Interesting call from DPS this morning
I received a call from a trooper in the neighboring county this morning (Saturday of all days). He had some questions about my background, in particular a PI ticket and free night in the county hotel from when I was in college 11 years ago. I explained, even told him that I had included a certified copy of the disposition from the court with my application. He said he wasn't concerned about that and that he was sending my paperwork to DPS in my county the day after labor day.
The odd part was that he asked me all sorts of questions like if I had a college degree, where I went to college, what I do for a living. He asked several qusetions about my employer too. It was like I was being interviewed for a job.
He even asked me the question that I really hoped he wouldn't but he did......"So why did you apply for a license to carry a concealed weapon?"
I almost was a smart alleck and said something along the lines of it my constitutional right...or because I can....or ....well you get the jist. I just said something about protecting my family (we expect our first kid in January) and myself. He seemed ok with that answer, just hit a nerve I guess. I feel I shouldn't have to justify myself to him....
Anywho, I thought this was an interesting. Anyone else get call during the background check?
Also, if my paperwork is being sent along to the next place on Tuesday, where am I in the process. I sent my app in the first part of August. This is moving a lot faster than I expected.
Thanks
JET

Did not experience anything like that & have never heard of anyone else having a call like that.
Carry 24-7 or guess right.

Me neither and it sounds pretty fishy to me. Did you get the name of the person calling you? Did the number come up on caller ID?

In twelve years of following CHL matters, I've never heard of anyone getting a call like that.
I consider it intrusive beyond the scope of the authorized background investigation, and I suggest sharing your concerns with your local DPS Sergeant. From your account, the trooper didn't seem to actually be interested in the PI arrest, but used it as a launching pad to ask questions that have nothing to do with qualifying for a CHL.
Please let us know what comes of this.

Sounds like they have drafted troopers into the office to help clean up the overflow. Obviously, without training.

Re: Interesting call from DPS this morning
Once you get your CHL, I'd contact DPS in the CHL Dept. in Austin and let them know what happened. I bet they have no idea a Trooper was doing this. As Kevin said, I've never heard of anything like this.

Re: Interesting call from DPS this morning
Thanks everyone for your comments. At the time of the call, it struck me kinda funny. The more I thought about it though the more I'm a little . I'm considering calling DPS about this on Tuesday, but don't want to "rock the boat" right now and possibly delay myself. I know thats retaliation isn't SUPPOSED to happen, but you never know when dealing with humans. I think I might wait until I get my plastic, then file a complaint.
It was refreshing however to know that things are moving along faster than I expected. It has been less than a month and I'm farther along in the process than I thought I'd be. I fully expected my packet to still be in the inbox unopened right now. What is the general process timeline after it gets sent to the county of residence? What are some things that could still trip me up (fingerprints, etc?)
Thanks.
This forum has been very helpful in the whole process. Just what I needed was another forum to be addicted to checking

Re: Interesting call from DPS this morning
Jet4,
That is really strange. I'm in Lubbock as well and I haven't received any call like that and our dates are only a few days apart. Just out of curiosity, what "neighboring county" was it? If you don't want to say in open forum I understand, but since we're pretty close here I'd like to be on the lookout in case the same thing occurs.

This sounds very fishy . . .
On the telephone, how do you know it actually WAS a trooper?
