What is with the sympathy?

What is with the sympathy?
I just don't understand the sympathy on this board with the DPS staff? We all have jobs and if you don't have too much work to do, I would be looking for some downsizing. If I get too far behind my customers and sales force bug me until I get caught up! No, I don't particularly like it but that is business. These folks are WAY behind on processing applications and they need to be kicked in the butt until the catch back up. If everyone just sits back and takes it as it comes, its never going to get fixed. I am not saying to call and yell at them, but make it clear waiting 180 days for an application that was promised to take 60 days is NOT acceptable. A group of 8 of us took a class and mailed everything off at the middle of Feb and none of us are past "Processing Application"

Welcome to TexasCHLforum. Thanks for registering.
It really isn't a matter of sympathy, it's recognition of what's going on and why. The evidence indicates people aren't sitting around and all the kicking in the world isn't going to change anything. There is a shortage of people and this has to be fixed by the Legislature.
Here is a thread discussing the problem and necessary legislative action to correct it. http://www.texasshooting.com/TexasCHL_F ... &sk=t&sd=a

You know, come to think of it, the snip I had on the phone did say it could take up to 180 days now. When I asked about the 60 day period promised by the DPS she gave me dead silence.

It isn't a 60 day promise from DPS - it is a 60 (or 90) day requirement mandated by the legislature. But there is no penalty either - so it takes longer quite often.red2000vette wrote:When I asked about the 60 day period promised by the DPS she gave me dead silence.

We don't know where the bottleneck is.bhtkevin wrote:I just don't understand the sympathy on this board with the DPS staff?
I can think of two likely reasons:
- DPS workers or contractors are not working efficiently, which would be the fault of DPS management.
- DPS is doing the best job they can, but they are backlogged and can't hire more workers because their budget is fixed for two years. That would be the fault of the legislature and governor.
If the workload and budget are the source of the problem, DPS needs to be able to spend the license application fees, instead of having them go into general revenue. That was how the system was supposed to work.
Texas government is full of problems like this. Some state parks are open limited hours because Texas Parks and Wildlife Department can't afford to pay people to collect fees at the gates. Hunting license fees that were supposed to be used for conservation and development are sitting in the bank.

Under very limited circumstances, DPS can take up to 180 days. However, it has to be something extraordinary like trying to get your background info and you happen to be a retired spy for the CIA. Seriously, it has to be something extraordinary and they have to send you a letter explaining exactly what they need and the letter must be send before the 60 calendar days are up.red2000vette wrote:You know, come to think of it, the snip I had on the phone did say it could take up to 180 days now. IMHO...throwing up our hands and saying "oh well" is going to make it worse. They are becoming expert now at using excuses and will milk that for all it's worth. The only way to fix a problem department is a complete enema. The people in that department now have lazy down to a science and they will infect any new personal you bring on. I have seen it happen before. Those folks probably spend half the day boohoo'ing about how tough they have it. I picture total melt down on the horizon. Remember...I said it first.
