TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Who knew Secret Service agents were so handy for parents of elementary school kids?
Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, taking questions from an Indiana crowd Saturday, called on a 5th grade teacher. Noting that his 10-year-old daughter, Malia, is starting the 5th grade, he asked: "Any tips? What should I be waiting around for?"
Someone called out, "boys."
"What!" Obama exclaimed in mock horror, as the audience laughed. "Hold on a sec. Maybe that home-schooling is all right. One reason I have to win here is so that I've got Secret Service around my girls at all times. They carry guns."
Malia might not be getting any play dates soon.
What an elitist socialist.

I don't think it was very humorous.
I suppose only certain people are allowed to joke or make light of firearms in schools.

Obama is fast becoming known for making poor jokes at the wrong time.
I do not like his political stance, but I do recognize when he is kidding "or trying to" and when he is not.

While I agree it was a joke, and shouldn't be taken as seriously as some take it, it DOES outline a problem.
Carrying guns in school is a nono unless you're one of the "Only Ones" (i.e. a cop, etc)
While most of us civillians cannot have a personal policeman to protect us 24/7, someone in high public office usually does.
In my eyes, it makes it much harder for a President to remember what it's like for the rest of us that don't have secret service protection for the rest of our lives after becoming president.
(PS McCain would make the same joke in the same circumstance, I guarantee it. His sense of humor is worse.)

Kidding or not, the guy is a hypocrite of the worst kind.
what's that old phrase, "What's good for the goose, is good for the gander..."
I understand his attempt at comedy. nice. too bad the undertone is so jacked up for the rest of U.S.

He may have been making a joke but the sad truth is he meant it as well!

It would be nice if they remembered the vast amjority of the voters do not have personal body guards.

Where's the full investigation? What has happened to "zero tolerance?" Why is there no outcry by the PTA, the teacher's union or the ACLU?
If any "regular" Dad had made the same remarks (joking or not) of violence on school grounds, they'd be thrown to the ground and hauled off to the station.

I guess it depends on the school district and where you live The School principals and teachers where I live seem to mostly have a wonderful sense of humor, even though its a more liberal area than most.

Maybe he wasn't drinking, but he still had the thought in his head to be able to make a joke about it.
My late wife used to call it "Kidding, dead on the level."
Of course a great comeback would have been to point out that CHL holders carry guns too, making everyone around them safe.

It shows his elitist attitude. "You can't have guns but I can. I'm more important than you simpletons."

I see where he was trying to be humorous, I just don't find that remark funny.
