Loading .270 Win

Post by beefmobile »

Hey guys I've been loading .223 and 9mm with great results. I recently got a nice Savage .270 and have considered loading for it. Well, I stopped by the Bullet Trap in Plano yesterday to a few rounds through my G19. Now, the ONLY reason i go to the BT is because of their $90/year military membership. If they didn't have that, i would never set foot in that place. Anyway, they're getting out of selling reloading equipment so they have all their components sliced in half...as in 50% off. You can't pass that up!

So i picked up 200 .270 Speer 130gr BTSP, 200 9mm 147gr Speer gold dot hollowpoints, and a set of RCBS .270 dies.

Now, i've been using Varget for .223 and it's worked out great so far. From what i understand, it's a fast-burning powder optimal for short-action cartridges. I only found one load for .270 and Varget, and that was 44-48gr (start to max) and a 3.23" COAL. I loaded up 5 rounds and decided i may switch powders.

Any thoughts? I've been reading that H4831 is good for .270 and 30-06, but i'd like to have a powder i can use for both .270 and .223, but that's not a must. Basically, can i use Varget and/or is there a better choice?

The .270 performs best with powders on the slower end of the spectrum. IMR 4895 is the fastest powedr I would load a .270 with and would prefer something in the IMR 4350/4831 range. For all intents and purposes the .270 Winchester is a magnum. The cartrage is overbore capacity of the .270 bore and slower powders perform best as far as accuracy and velocity are concerned.

I love Varget, but not for the 270. Note that Hodgdon does not list Varget data for the 270 in bullets over 140gr. I get very good accuracy in the 270 with Alliant RL19. Agree with the previous post that you really need to stay with the slower powders if you want to get full use of the 270's abilities.

It's been a while since I have reloaded for .270, but plan on restarting soon. Going from memory, I tried IMR 4831 with decent results but not spectacular. This powder was initially selected mainly because my dad was loading 7mm with it and getting remarkable groups. In the .270 the groups weren't bad, but about the same as I was getting with factory loads. My groups tightened up nicely using 48.5 grains of IMR 4064.

I'd like that too, but they're really at the opposite ends of the spectrum. You can find load data for 270 with Varget, but I don't think its a recommended powder. I think 4831 has been the go-to power for 270 for quite some time.
