Any .50 BMG reloaders on here?

#1

Post by TheGasMan »

I'm new to the .50 game and have a question about the primer pocket. I picked up some brass that was relatively inexpensive. My reloading area isn't set up yet for the big press, but I wanted to deprime and tumble some of the brass so I'm ready when the setup is complete. After quite a bit of reading, most of the reloaders seem to deprime using a punch and hammer on crimped primers. So I tried this on one of the cases and the primer came out with very little effort. However, there is a ridge left in the primer pocket. It almost looks like a part of the primer stayed in the flash hole. The expelled primer didn't seem to be missing any metal. I've heard the primer pockets can be pretty irregular in this surplus brass. Is this a burr from manufacturing or is part of the primer left? Any other thoughts?

Looks like the crimp.

Do you have a primer pocket swager for .50 BMG size primers?

No, I don't have the swager yet, I've got one on the way from Midway. I thought the crimp referred to the indentations on the base of the case around the primer. Is this wrong? Does it actually refer to seat of the primer pocket? Sorry for the questions, but I've never seen this before with reloading traditional calibers. Thanks for the help! :tiphat:

Oh, I was looking around the rim of the primer pocket and didn't even look at the base of the primer pocket circling the hole. I see what you are referring to now. I have no idea what it is.

I'd suggest posting this question on a big reloading forum like thehighroad.org or thefiringline.com for widest input.
