In New Orleans, a Peter Richard Rubens was convicted of second-degree murder for fatally shooting Robert Irwin in 2008.
Rubens, contractor, was working on a house (not his residence) at night when Irwin walked in unexpectedly without knocking. The two men knew each other. Irwin had worked for Rubens on construction jobs. Irwin was reportedly barefoot and intoxicated.
Rubens claimed that Irwin attacked him with a carpenter's pencil.
Possibly relevant is the report that Irwin "had also taken up with" Rubens's girlfriend.
The jury returned a guilty verdict after deliberating for one hour.
