You say it happened in Garland? If so it's not you to blame...more likely just the way things are in that area. Much like east Arlington or South Ft. Worth.

He was verbally threatened with deadly force back at the gas station. If someone threatened me whom I believed had a gun and was chasing me, I'd make it as difficult as possible for him to make good on that threat. As was also mentioned, he had specific training in this kind of driving, so I have no problem with his utilization of those skills in his effort to escape. I also doubt that he was doing so with abandon for the safety of other drivers.

1) Unless you are in a job in which the risk of exposure to aggressive jerks is higher than normal, say LEO or Paramedic, or something like that, it is NOT normal to frequently get challenged by aggressive jerks. So I think you need to talk to some of your closer friends, and ask them, "Be honest with me, do I seem to ask for trouble?" It may well be that they see something in you that you either can't, or won't see in yourself, and their input might be instructive. But be prepared to hear something that you're not going to like hearing, and also be honest enough to deal with it appropriately if you do.
Funny you mention this. I Was talking to an old friend of mine today, and he basically said that I tend to "stare people down" when entering an area. I've always chalked it up to just being aware of my surroundings, but he said it tends to freak people out. Also apparently, my grooming and dress (Shaved head, and sunglasses, nice shirts and slacks) make me look like "A Mafia Hitman"

I''m not quite sure what to do about that.

Also, apparently I sneer a lot. Thats probably caused by allergies and having a full nose many times.

Amazing to realize just how much little things I never paid attention to can affect others.

nitrogen, just FYI, in gang circles, staring someone down is called "mad-dogging," and it is considered a challenge and a legitimate incitement to violence. There are parts of L.A. (where I'm from) that mad-dogging will get you killed fast. If the bonehead that gave you such a bad time the other night was a gangbanger, he might have misinterpreted your stare as "mad-dogging." Perhaps, particularly since you said you usually wear sunglasses, you might practice averting your gaze a bit when you are sizing up an area, and observing from your peripheral vision. The guy being observed is probably less likely to take it as directed at him.

I'm not suggesting that this particular incident was your fault. It wasn't. And even if you were staring the guy down, it's no excuse to go all cattywaumpus and freaky on you like he did. He's obviously a jerk.

Anyway, that would be my suggestion.

People have told me the same thing, but I think it's more of a lower-level street enforcer look in my case. I guess I kinda see it:

Image

I have a large frame and a lot of muscle, as well as large hands (that's a full-sized Hi-Power looking very small in my hands). I have been mistaken for a bouncer on multiple occasions while walking down 6th street on my way to a music venue. I also get greeted with "what's up big man" by total strangers walking by in certain parts of town.

I chose "rarely/never" from the poll. I cannot recall a single incident that someone decided that I would be a good target to rouse a reaction from. I am a relatively quiet individual and don't speak much unless I have a specific reason. I think my demeanor gives the impression that I mean serious business if messed with rather than a trophy to be conquered.

I've met several of you in person, and would be interested to hear what your impressions were when we met.

I figured you for a fellow member of the armed Teddy Bear club, junior division... :evil2:

I guess the reason I get very little grief from strangers is I look confidant without challenging and way to much trouble to mess with.

Well said. From a pre-fight tactics standpoint, it might be a higher-percentage technique to observe strangers'/unknown contacts' hands and waistband area. The only drawback is that he might jump to the conclusion that you are checking out his . . . package. :eek6

Visual discipline is a complex, underrated skill; it is needed for safe driving (at any speed), marksmanship ("see what you need to see"), managing business and personal relationships effectively, discreetly sizing up unknown situations and potential threats, and not getting caught by your spouse/SO for appreciating other manifestations of Creation. ;-)

What to do about the Mafia Hitman look? "You're never fully dressed without a smile," comes to mind.

I'd call 911 and let them get a recording of his threats.

Problem is, I can't do that and get a photo at the same time; even if the lighting isn't great, a photo works a lot better than a description. Besides, with so many carriers not passing the GPS info, and quite a few phone still not having the feature at all, I'd rather not call them until I have the opportunity to give them the location and reason for the call.

Maybe in hindsight you would have. Up until that point it seems the guy had simply acted like a jerk. That certainly wouldn't justify a 911 call. Beyond the one threat, I don't see anything to be overly concerned about until the aggressive driving started. It sounded like some idiot spouting off. Yes, certainly something to be alert about, but no immediate threat or overtly suspicious activity to warrant a call to 911, up until the point where the chase was on.

If someone threatens to assault me that would definitely justify a 911 call.
Him: "Hey man that's *MY* gas pump. Back out or I'll mess you up!"
"Ees gun! Ees not safe!"

When receiving verbal threats, try this. Dial 911 on your cell and start giving the info, my name is, I am at this location, I am being verbally threatened by, give description, describe car, and so on. Chances are he will be gone before you finish.

Just remember he may also want to fight or may decide to fire during exit. Some of these punks simply do not care. Remember, as far as he knew you could have just as easily been an off duty LEO.

The information about how you look at someone being considered such an insult in the gangbangers circles bothers me somewhat. That is the sort of information that is useful when you are told not to make eye contact with some dog breeds or possibly wild animals such as lions and tigers. However I am not going to walk around gazing at the ground when I beleive there may be gangbangers in the area. I could really care less if my observing someone may offend them, I will not get into a staring match with anyone, but I will not hang my head like a sheeple either. I will continue to act like a normal human and go about my business.

That being said, I will also say that there are some areas I will not travel into unless it is absolutly required to do so. And when it is required I will be full of gas before I enter those zones, and will not be making any pit stops.
