Looking into ordering a case of 9x18 Mak ammo. Anybody have any experience with Brown Bear, Silver Bear, or Fiocchi ammunition in this caliber?

My P-3ATs like 87gr semi-jacketed flat tip Santa Barbara. Its $80 per 1,000 with reasonable shipping charges at
http://www.southernohiogun.com/ammo2.html , if you can’t find it locally. This is surplus Spanish police ammo which is about 20 years old but it goes bang every time and with substantial recoil (about like Cor-Bon). I prefer it to Fiocchi but I‘ve never shot Silver Bear.

Careful, .380 - aka 9X17, 9mm Kurtz, or 9mm short - is not the same as Makarov 9x18.
The Mak bullet is actually slightly larger diameter, and the case is 18 mm.
I don't know where to find 9x18 - try AIM Surplus or J&G Sales.

Andrew

I've got 2 Russians in 9 X18. Have shot nothing but Brown Bear and Silver Bear with no probs. Picked it up at gun shows and/or Cheaper Than Dirt for around $6 or $7 a box. Kinda handy (for daughter) to practice cheap with same ammo as carried.

I've got a case of Brown Bear 9x18 that shoots just fine as practice ammo.
For carry, the magazines are loaded with Hornady XTP (which isn't easy to find).

Not to purposefully go off-caliber in this discussion, but I am looking at the Silver Bear stuff they got on CTD in .223 for the AR...
They come in the sealed containers (1 case, 1000 rnds) and look to be a good thing for long term storage, or at least the ammo is sealed up away from the elements for the most part...
If you say the Silver Bear stuff goes bang everytime, I suppose any problems would be along the lines of keeping the weapon clean and clear of any crud coming off those cases I suppose...
Who makes the Silver Bear, or Bear type ammo anyway??? And are they the ones who seal up the cases, or is that done by others???
I guess I gotta a call to make to CTD as well...Unless somebody beats me to the punch...

Looks like its Russian made...

Whats the advantage of zinc-plated steel cases??? Corrosion resistant, I understand, but doesn't that stuff become brittle and flake off under high stresses and temperature after a period of time???
That to me would appear to be a "bear" (pardon the pun) to clean...
And it looks "not" to be a full case, but more likely a little over a half case...at $90 + the $3 ammo fee and S&H, it doesn't appear to be that good a deal...
I'm thinking I could buy myself some PMP (South African) .223, and seal it up myself...I dunno...
Somebody slap me upside the noggin' and make sure I'm functioning correctly???
