TV reporters are saying that the officers expended 30 rounds.

Here's "one" TV account...

http://www.click2houston.com/news/13789497/detail.html
Community activist Quanell X said the outcome could have been avoided.

"The first police officer did a great job in talking to this young man at this particular scene today. But he did not have the time that he needed because SWAT team responded with their shoot-to-kill mentality," Quanell X said.
Quanell X being the stalwart, law-abiding, expert on police procedures he is...(sarcasm mode - off)

I'm waiting for him or someone else to say something about:

"Well why didn't they "Taser" him??? (not that I don;t already know the answer to that...

Maybe I'll make my next million on developing a Taser device that can shoot from 100 yards out or something...

The TV news here is notable for fishing-out ignorance and displaying it as truth.

Why do they even report anything said by Quanell X? This retard needs to fade away.

Hey, I have an idea. Let's just make the cops get rid of their guns altogether. That would eliminate any of these unfortunate circumstances.

They could carry tasers around and pepper spray. That way when someone shoots at them or aims a gun at them, they don't have to use deadly force. Then we could keep these sub-humans in jail and pay for it with our tax dollars. If a cop gets killed then so what. I mean, they're the enemy in this situation anyway. This guy obviously had a troubled past and most likely came from a single parent home. We should love him...not shoot him! We should keep these people from killing themselves. We DO want them around in our neighborhoods don't we?

Quanel X, Jessie Jackson, John Wiley Price (our Dallas version of Quanel X) and the Reverend Al Sharpton would all be happy. That's my goal in life...to make these guys happy.

The developer of "Modern Policing", Sir Robert Peel, did exactly that. English "Bobbies" are named after him, and they don't carry guns because this Englishman believed in the American ideal: that government should only use force with the consent of the governed.

Peel believed that any police officer needing to use deadly force could/should be able to borrow a gun from the nearest citizen. "Consent of the governed", and all that. The historical record shows that is exactly what happened in Bobby Peel's Jolly Ol' England.

Wow. Seems like a whole lot of people have a hard time grasping reality.

Not anymore, dude! British citizens are only allowed to loan cops pellet guns and sling-shots now. I've been to the U.K. a few times, an interesting place with horrible food and worse weather...man, am I happy I live on this side of the pond! :patriot:

On a more serious note, this encounter represents a tough and unfortunate circumstance. The deceased was armed, possibly stoned, and likely disturbed in some way...basically, a "lose-lose-lose" situation for an LEO to deal with. I'd like to know more substantive facts about this standoff before drawing any conclusions. That NBC news coverage wasn't particularly incisive to say the least.

"I was looking through binoculars," witness Michael Grant said. "We seen the gun when they shot him. The gun fell out of his hand. I don't know what all the extra, all of the extra shots, I don't know what that was all for. I think they murdered the man. That was unnecessary what they did. They shot over 30, 40 times and he was already on the ground."

"Why didn't someone do something other than just to start shooting?" cousin Cassandra Carpenter said.
I agree that this was a lose, lose, lose situation. But it doesn't take much of a brain to know that if you have a gun & refuse to submit to the cops you run the risk of being shot.

In a split second this man could have taken the life of bystanders or LEO. Which puts a limit on the amount of talking you can do in this matter. A guick end is the safest for all those, except the person holding the gun.

I've heard stories about the ghetto and projects, etc. When the cops show up, they are the enemy. People yell at them and curse at them. It's amazing how they treat someone that's there to protect them from madmen like this. Funny that one of the first things they do in an emergency is dial 911 to get the enemy over there.

I can't imagine what the cops in these situations are dealing with. You are surrounded by a bunch of people that hate you, you are trying to do your job and are dealing with a psycho with a gun pointing at you. I don't see any other option but to use deadly force. I also don't understand why they are complaining about how many times the police shot him. If you have three officers with ten round clips...there's 30 rounds right there in a couple of seconds. Oh wait...these people would have to be able to count and do basic math to realize that. Never mind.

Not quite. From the text on that site: "can be delivered to a distance of up to 100 feet".

It's better than 5-7 yards, but it's still a far cry from 100 yards.
