I've tried both AIW and Cross-Draw IW while driving. I'm right-handed and when carrying AIW I have to be very careful that the butt of the gun doesn't get tangled up in the shoulder belt. When carrying cross-draw it's less likely to get caught in the belt, but I have to move my gun hand farther to draw.

What are your thoughts on this?

Long road trip, concealed shoulder holster.

I have a "Kingston" holster which fastens around the driver's seat and positions my car gun on the front face of said seat.

My onbody pistol(s) stay where they are
and the seatbelt holster draw is easy and snag free.

Inside of the door pocket in a basic holster. Gun moves back to my belt holster when I get out of the car. Holsters stay where they are. That, or ankle carry.

SA is your friend while driving. The most likely threat is a carjacking or a road rage type scenario where you end up getting boxed in. Stay alert, stay alive. Especially when your vehicle is stopped. Leave room for escape by not stopping to close to the vehicles in front of you. Avoid the middle lanes at a traffic light if possible, etc.

I leave mine as is, I find the 3-4 oclock position I keep my gun at rides just fine for sitting in the car.

Using the seatbelt 'fishing' method they show in the video, allows you to carry strong side (assuming you are a righty like I am) and still be effective in being able to retrieve your weapon. YMMV

The rule of thumb for leaving escape room for you to escape around the vehicle in front of you is to stop far enough back so that you can see the entire rear bumper and 100% of their rear tires. FYI.

I leave mine in the wallet holster but move it under my left leg, I can draw from easily from that position then once I'm out of the city where i won't need to be stopping anymore I put it under the edge of the folded center seat/console. SA is king and if I'm in my truck I will just drive off if at all possible. My alternate carry xdm also stays in a seat pocket between my knees, it would be a slow draw and take 2 hands to unholster but it's there if I need it.

In my Dodge Grand Caravan, my S&W M&P 9mm 5inch stays in its Safariland 7TS ALS holster at 3:00. In my wife's car (she has leather seats), I unclip the holster from its QLS belt mount and slide the holstered pistol into the door pocket. My Smith lives it its holster unless I am using or cleaning it.

Same here. I also am now in the habit of carrying back-ups on both ankles (Galco Ankle Glove). So I pull my trowser legs up to the top of my boots for very easy access, with either hand.

I note that some of the replies seem to advocate putting the weapon somewhere in the car where it is neither concealed nor carried openly, e.g. on the front of the driver's seat. In Texas, as far as I know, if one is carrying concealed, then the gun must be concealed, even in a car. If one is carrying openly, then the gun must be in a belt holster or shoulder holster.

If I'm wrong about this, please correct me.

Texas PC 46.02 says unlicensed carriers can have a pistol in their car but it must not be "in plain view."

PC 46.035 says that "partially or wholly visible" is OK for licensees as long as the pistol is "... in a shoulder or belt holster ..."

We have not yet had the proverbial "test case" yet. However, around the first of last year, some chiefs of police and district attorneys expressed the opinion that license holders would not be cited for carrying their pistol in an off-body holster while in their vehicle.

PC §46.035. UNLAWFUL CARRYING OF HANDGUN BY LICENSE HOLDER.
(a) A license holder commits an offense if the license holder carries a handgun
on or about the license holder’s person under the authority of Subchapter H,
Chapter 411, Government Code, and intentionally displays the handgun in plain
view of another person in a public place. It is an exception to the application of
this subsection that the handgun was partially or wholly visible but was carried in
a shoulder or belt holster by the license holder.

In Texas, as licensed carrier, I am comfortable carrying my holstered pistol in the door pocket of my car. When I visit New Mexico next week, I'll keep it on my belt.
