I bought a Walther P22 a while back to save money on target practice. It doesn't take long for it to pay for itself compared to the .45 rounds I otherwise shoot.

I've noticed feeding problems. Specifically, the top round in the magazine tends to tilt up, jamming the slide. Once I've cleared that, things seem to be OK. Has anyone else noticed this problem?

I've had a P22 for years. It hasn't done what yours does. Mine tends to not feed normal velocity ammo if the magazine is full. If I only load 5 or so, it will feed correctly. However, if I use CCI mini mags that are higher velocity, I can load the mags full and all feed reliably.

Are the rounds you are using hollow points by chance? I would try some round nose to see if the symptoms are the same. In any case, try different ammo.

P22's have an historic issue of not properly feeding ammo other than CCI, due not enough blow back pressure

What you may want to do to fix it, is invest in the barrel extension
With the barrel extension, the pressure increases and relieves the issue

I have a Sig Mosquito to save money and teach beginners to shoot. It can be pretty finicky with different types of .22 ammo too. It will fail to feed, fail to eject, stovepipe, etc. A friend told me not to clean it as something he'd heard might work and surprisingly it runs better when I don't clean it much. And yes, I am very conscious of my grip, stance, etc. as a factor in it running properly.

Semi-auto .22 pistols and rifles for that matter all have their quirks regarding different brands and velocities of ammunition. I always check a new weapon with everything from High Velocity down to CB longs. Some of mine will perform down to subsonic ammo. Having stated that I don't think your problem is with the ammo, but rather the magazine. I've noticed some box magazine tend to change the angle of the follower and thus the loaded ammunition as the spring is compressed. Sometimes the magazine lips may need adjusting or the follower could be binding. One easy step is to check the lubrication on the internals of the magazine. If the magazine is open and the spring and follower are visible watch it as you load each round to see if the angle changes. One other suggestion for you is to go to the Walther Forum. I found a lot of helpful information for my PPks. There is a section on the P22 that includes threads on magazines and best ammo.

I had a similar problem with my Walther PK380 and found (for me ) I wasn't using a single fluid pull on the slide. I actually had a bit of a hesitation in my motion which causes it. I also noticed with the Walthers that I have fewer problems using Fiocchi Ammo. It's a good/cheap target ammo.
