Buying a gun this week? Have a LTC or don't be in a hurry.

Post by Scott B. »

Our friends at the FBI debuted their new NICS system today. They were going to roll it out last year, but delayed it after the Charleston church shooting (and subsequent fallout).

Right now it's not working, so nobody is doing background checks. We have our fingers crossed that it might be running later in the day.

If you've got your good guy/gal card, you'll be fine.

Long story short, if you visit your local gun store and the personnel look more frazzled than usual, you'll know why.

Good info thanks,

I wonder if Academy will stop doing unnecessary checks on LTC holders as a result....

A buddy of mine has bought 2 guns at Academy recently. Neither time did they run a background check on him since he had his LTC.

While not getting an instant response as normal would be very frustrating, isn't there something in the law that says they have to give an answer within X number of days as to prevent them from sitting on an application for whatever reason they deem. So wouldn't this just start the countdown and could mean you obtain your gun without the FBI ever knowing ?

That clock only starts once the background check is submitted. Right now, you can't start the process so no clock in play.

Tempting conspiracy theory.

What they're doing is supposed to speed the system up and modernize it. Anyone who's ever worked with government technology contracts knows it will be 50% over budget, 3 yrs late, and built with 10 yr old off-the-shelf technology.

Alas, :iagree:

Or worse; vis-a-vis HealthCare.gov: millions over budget, based on nothing functional, and wasn't reasonably operational for months after "go live."

Good luck with the firearm-buying public until this is fixed. :???:

I also have purchased a few guns at my "local" Academy (closest is over an hour away) recently and didn't have to wait on a check after handing them my LTC. They also didn't hassle me for buying 500rds of 5.56.

Agreed. When I bought my last firearm at Academy, the fellow started talking about a background check and I said "I have a CHL."
He says "Yes! Nice to see. No background check to run!"

I'm out of there pretty quickly. So, I've never had a background check at Academy when purchasing a firearm.

Have they put the ARs back on display?

There's a glimmer of hope! I was able to get into the system and check NTN status and look at the new background submission form.

Next step is to restore the integration between our FFL software and NICS.

Re: LTC background checks.

Let's hope it's a momentary delay at worst. For that matter, I wonder if the states have a queue they can dump batch queries into? I can't imagine them doing them one check at a time, but maybe they do.

Not as of last Thursday. Drove past one and didn't have anything going on so I went in to see.

I also checked on July 22 in Lewisville, none in the racks, only non-EBR's and shotguns.
