Utah Inmate Kills Corrections Officer

A 27-year-old self-professed Neo-Nazi (you gotta look at this guy's picture to add new meaning to the question, "Did he have any distinguishing marks?") stole a corrections officer's gun at the University of Utah Medical Center this morning, shot the officer in the head, carjacked a nearby SUV at gunpoint, led police on a high-speed chase, then bailed and ran into an Arby's restaurant.
Salt Lake City Police Lt. Mike Ross said a 59-year-old Arby's customer is "the hero in this thing. He wrestled the gun away." The man, who did not want to be identified or interviewed by the media for fear of retaliation, fought with the suspect and suffered a cut that required several stitches, Ross said.
No indication whether or not the 59-year-old was CHL/CCW. But I think that "wrestling" bit might be open to some interpretation. Wouldn't surprise me if the customer got the drop on the escaping felon and disarmed that way. Regardless, the customer obviously helped end a situation that well could have resulted in more deaths.

That thing does not even appear to be part of the human race.
Please keep the prayers of the murdered Officer in your prayers.
There are some good folks at the Correctional Peace Officer Foundation....they will most likely take good care of the family during this horrible time.

But I will challenge you on this...
Take a good look at Mr. Tattoo...Can you guess where the "bull" (10 ring) is on that mug???

well, THAT just gives me a warm fuzzy feelin'....

I wonder if the presence of the MRI machine had a bearing on the gun handling?

They weren't in the MRI room, because the gun can't go in; the officer has to wait outside (usually in the control room, where he can keep visual contact).
But going in for MRI also means "no restraints", so as they were in the exam room, the officer had to remove all restraints. I can't believe they sent a single officer on that job. We always send two: one armed, the other not. The unarmed officer handles the restraints and
all contact with the inmate, to avoid this kind of tragedy.

It may have been when the switch from steel cuffs to plastic was being made:

Well, that's what we call it! I like tats, but I wouldn't get one I couldn't cover up with clothing if I wanted to. One of my dads friends is covered in tats and he's in his 60's. He says he wishes he wouldn't have gotten them now. He always wears long sleeve shirts to cover them up.
