I've been thinking about getting a .40 recently and have looked at the Glock 22, Walther PPQ M2, Smith & Wesson M & P tactical 5" ect.
I already have a Glock 17 and a .45 for carry but think I want a .40 now.
i have shot several .40's at the range and think I like the glock, what would you buy?

I'd go with the glock. I have a few and I am happy with their performance.

Nothing wrong with .40. I have owned all of the glock .40 models, M&P, H&K, and a Beretta 96 Centurion.

I can recommend the Glock, and the M&P.

I'm about to buy a G22 FDE for use at the ranch.

The PPQ is suppose to have an awesome trigger. I have never shot one but the M1 version is on my list to buy. If its as good as the PPS and P99 you will not be disappointed but I might be biased.

I traded my Glock 19 (Gen 3) for a Glock 23 (Gen 4) about 9 months ago and I like it a lot. You can always by a 9mm conversion barrel and have the best of both worlds.

I had a S&W M&P .40 and for some reason I could never adjust over to the M&P. It is all about personal preference.

You can usually get police trade in Glock 22 dirt cheap, I'd look that direction if you want a Glock in .40

I have the Glock 27 and love it, but all Glocks seem to be balanced and shoot well. 40 is a good round.

I have 3 .40 cal guns (a Glock 23, Glock 27, and a Kahr PM40). My favorite is the Glock 23, but my daily carry gun in the Kahr PM40. If I had to have 1 .40 cal, it'd be the Kahr because it's the most practical. Carry with a holster or pocket carry. Been carrying it for about 7 years now.

I own two pistols in .40 caliber. A G23 gen 4 and a Steyr S40A1. Both are great shooters. Carry the Glock the most.

This may be just me, but I have almost always found .40's to have more recoil that 9mm's and .45's. I have a .40 that shoots great from a steady rest, but I never could shoot it nearly as good as I could my .45 from a standing position because of the recoil, or at least that is what I have always blamed it on.

My first gun was an XD(M) 3.8" compact chambered in .40 and I still love shooting it. I have since bought an XD(M) 3.8" compact slide and barrel chambered in 9mm. The 9mm slide and barrel fit right on the original .40 frame and works flawlessly. I'm a slightly better shooter with the 9mm setup, but shoot the .40 very well so I switch between them depending on my mood.

I would suggest looking for a model that will let you do either a simple barrel conversion or a full slide conversion just so you can always have the option of switching it up.

I was going to get a .40 taurus slim. but when I tried it out the recoil was a tad high for my taste. I am going to stick with my lc9 for now.

I have read recently that FBI and some LEO organizations are dropping the .40 in favor of something else, 9 mm, .357sig, or .45, etc.

It might be a good idea to review all the different pros and cons in this somewhat uncertain situation before committing.

From my recent research, it appears the .40 has more recoil than the 9mm or the .45. It seems this is because there isn't an all-metal pistol that was made specifically for the .40 like there is for the 9mm and the .45. Apparently most if not all all-metal pistols for the .40 are pistols that were originally designed for 9mm and then retrofitted with a .40 barrel.
