Fascinating!
I am always tinkering with different solvents/lubes/preservatives.
Today I put some automatic transmission fluid (ATF for short) on the locking lugs of one of my 700 BDL bolt-action rifles. Will see how it performs over the next several weeks.

Never heard of these guys. I'm guessing they will soon be gone. I'm addicted to Hoppe's and never bought anything else.

I guess I am out of the gun gossip loop, I had no idea there was any 'controversy' over FireClean -- actually I did not even know it existed. I am still living off of a great big bottle of Militec-1 and some lithium grease I bought years ago. Militec-1 had its own go-around of controversy, but I have not yet found any reason to stop using it.
Putting vegetable oil on a firearm does sound a bit odd to me -- I'd be more likely to go with bacon grease, but that would probably just make me hungry...

I like it.
After suffering the malodorous Hoppe's No. 9, I bought some F.C. and find it does a great job with no stink.

Recently I bought a tube of Hoppe's Choke Tube Lube. I couldn't find the MSDS on their website, but I swear that it smells just like Vaseline petroleum jelly.

If you wade into the comment war that follows the article, the author says that it did a good job on ARs in some test they ran earlier, and several others say their guns clean up very well. But it apparently it only lubes, it does not protect against corrosion.

Andy they only did an FTIR test, which is not conclusive. It was funny too that it was stated that it took a week to do the test.
It would have taken me 30 minutes maximum to do the scans, including clean up.
Also he stated "I don’t see any sign of other additives such as antioxidants or corrosion inhibitors."
At the concentrations that they would be used you would not be able to detect with FTIR because of all of the other absorption bands.

There has got to be a tremendous profit margin on these products.
I could buy a quart of Mobile One and put 3 ozs of the stuff in a small jar and sell it for for than it cost me for the quart.

I don't have a Ph.D. in organic chemistry, but I sometimes I used to argue with those that did.
Sometimes I was even right.

Yep, I've been using the same quart of Mobil 1 (refilling a contact solution container) for the last 5 years. No problems.
Edit: I stayed in a Holiday Inn last night.
