School Marshall Program

I had a customer drop by the store and tell me that the DPS has started training for the School Marshal program? Has anyone heard anything?

Yes it is happening but don't get to excited over it. This was talked about last year and in the last two weeks people keep telling me that "did you hear they are going to finally let you carry in the classroom". No. It is still up to each and every school district and I can guarantee you that over 95% of them won't ever bother looking into it. Most of the districts who opt for this will be out in the rural areas or will be private schools. If you are within 50 miles miles of a major city don't hold your breath.

It of course is a step in the right direction but just understand that most of the highly populated districts will never go for this. They will just increase security at the schools and district officers if need be. When the lawyers and antis voice their opinion they don't give it a second thought.

No, they are law enforcement. Honestly not to knock on CHL instructors but many do don't have tactical or not enough tactical training to teach what needs to be learned for an armed school teacher. Not that some don't but this is a course that is supposed to be advanced from my understanding. The Marshall's will already have their CHL prior to taking this.

That's a different program and to my knowledge, DPS has not yet finished the class for the CHL Instructors to take.

Basically, I think LE will certify CHL instructors to specifically teach this course is what I think Mr. Cotton is talking about. If it ever has the need but honestly it is in it's infancy stage and none of the school districts around me are going to adopt this imo. So there is going to be a limited demand for a CHL instructor who is certified to teach this class. I just don't see this catching on unless the vast majority of the parents push the school boards to join up.

Paul Howe (CSAT) is teaching a class for teachers that will carry in the classroom. His class is called "Citizen Response to Active Shooter". He has taught/will teach a number of classes this year. He requires a basic handgun class prior to taking this class. It is also available for anyone to take, you can check the schedule on his web site.

I took his Rifle Instructor course a couple of years ago and it was the hardest class I've taken yet. :eek6

I haven't heard of any schools in my area participating in the Marshall program. I have heared of a few schools starting their own ISD police department and some are hiring off duty officers to work as armed guards also.

The bill was SB1857 and it requires DPS to create a special class for CHL Instructors to be certified to teach certain tactics to teachers. The DPS class will be between 15 and 20 hours, but there's no specified length of the course for us to teach teachers.

Yes. it began at Tarrant County College - Northwest Campus -the week of the 15th of July. I posted the Star-Telegram article then, plus a couple of the TV reports. There are 7 school personnel going through the School Marshal program - they could be anyone from superintendents to teachers to janitors - and they're being taught by DPS instructors.

As Charles mentioned - the OTHER program, the one where designated CHL Instructors will first learn and qualify as trainers, then teach CHL holding-teachers, is not ready for release by DPS.
