This is verbatim what my employee manual says, "Firearms, weapons, and other dangerous devices or substances are prohibited from the premises of Xxxxxxxxx without proper authorization."


Is a CHL proper authorization?

I'm going to take a stab at this and see how I do. Someone with more knowledge on the subject is WELCOME to correct me...

It is not illegal to carry at your work per the manual, but, if caught, I believe they could terminate your position and let you go, should they so choose.

No, it isn't unless someone who can speak for the organization specifically states that it is.
The statement above is also not legal 30.06 language so you have not received notification unless you have heard someone who speaks for the company state the words above verbally. In that case you have received notification and it would be illegal to carry.

Nobody has ever spoken about it. I also work in my own cubicle, and wouldn't probably get made. But, I try to do the right thing, and I'm positive my employers are pro-gun. I am not bringing up the topic though to anyone there.

Legally you should be ok then. Just remember though you are in violation of the employee handbook which is grounds for dismissal if you are discovered.

I don't disagree with the other's. Perfectly legal but could be fired. But, I think I would argue the "without proper authorization" part. Oooohhhh, you were talking about authorization from the company? My bad, I misunderstood that as I have authorization from Texas since I have a CHL.

my work has a little gun buster sign also, the only way my company will ever find out is when all hell breaks loose, by that time all bets are off!!! if i get fired after saving my life and maybe some of my co-workers, heck why not, maybe even my boss, so be it. maybe i'll make the 5 pm news or something. maybe the NRA will offer me a job or maybe uncle ted will adopt me. sure beats this "dead-end" job....no pun intended

You can argue it until you're blue in the face, but I don't think it would stop an employer who wants to fire you. If they don't mind you making an unemployment claim, they don't have to give a reason for ending your at will employment in Texas. Many companies go that route because then there's nothing to argue about.

In Texas, you don't even need to have a reason to fire (most of the time).

Interesting. Does the manual define who is authorized to give authorization? It is an interesting tactic, though. The state can't authorize us to carry at work. They can prohibit us from carrying in certain places, but they can't authorize us to carry in a situation like this.

In my experience, many policy manuals are purposely vague.

No, but most of the bosses are never in offices, and they themselves are big hunters. HR you might see on the way to the restroom. If I asked anyone I think it would come out awkward. Hey, is there any coffee? Is it cool that I have a gun? Wanna see my holster? Yeah, I wouldn't be comfortable with that.
