STI Guardian: Slide not locking back with WC mags

#1

Post by Medic218 »

Hey guys, just wanted to see if anyone had any advice on what direction I needed to head in.
As the title states the slide doesn't lock back, on empty, when I use Wilson Combat 7-rd mags in my STI Guardian, .45acp version. When I use the factory 6-rd mag everything works as it should.
Something else I've noticed is that when inserting the WC mags there is a little resistance on the mag at about 3/4 of the way in. A hair bit more of a push and it seats just fine. The factory 6-rd goes in smooth.
Both mags work great when firing, chambering and extracting.

What I want is a 7-rd capability and for the slide to lock back on empty.
Any ideas?

It is probably the followers.

I don't know about WC specifically, but I have had followers that were specific to not allow lock back.

Maybe.

I've tried to manipulate the slide slowly to see if I could see what the issue was and I just can't pinpoint the problem.

I guess it's worth mentioning that these same 7-rd WC mags work flawlessly in my Gov. model Kimber.

You could try replacing the follower with the Tripp Research FOL-HYB-45 hybrid follower. It has metal reinforcement where the follower engages the slide stop.

As far as I'm concerned, Tripp Research makes the best 1911 mags.

What Pawpaw said. Every mag I have that had this problem I replaced the followers with Tripp followers. End of problem every time.

I'll be home in a few days and will remove the slide and try to assess the situation a little better.
I'm still learning when it comes to trouble shooting the 1911 platform.
I'll break out the calipers on the mag bodies as well and see what I get.
I'll report back on that sometime Wednesday.
If I can't figure it out by then I'll give the Tripp followers a go.

He's a fantastic resource when it comes to 1911s.

I'll look into it when I get home in a few days. If I can't figure it out I'll holler at him.
