So, someone suggest a good prepackaged compact first aid kit. I want more than just a "blow out" kit because i likely wont be involved in a shooting or something crazy but I may and I will more likely be around boo boos and more severe injuries like deep cuts, animal bights, and hard falls. This is something I want to be able to carry around possibly even on my duty belt if I can find a compact black nylon pouch to carry it in.

I don't know about a prepackaged kit, but I threw a couple of band-aids in my range bag Saturday morning just because I thought it might be a good idea. Low and behold, my wife got bit by the slide on her first shot because she forgot how to hold the gun. A band-aid saved the day and allowed us to continue shooting!

most any place that has a health section (walmart, cvs, walgreens, etc.) has little kits that are about the size of an 8-track tape. They don't occupy much room in your range bag...

May I suggest two kits then based on what you have posted.

A small one for cuts and like you might carry with you.
Then depending on your level of training a larger one in a car, range bag, RV home.

It really depends on what your looking for.

My car/range bag includes 14ga long Catheter for needle decompression, CPR barrier masks (which don't work well in real use BTW.. but it's an available option), two tourniquets, pressure bandages, ect.... but also has band-aids and Neosporin.

If you really are just looking for a pocket sized duty belt carry deal.. Go to your local Walmart, pick up a small digital camera pouch, then mosey over to the pharmacy section and get some band-aids, Neosporin, tweezers, hydrocortisone cream and call it a day.

For something prepackaged and larger, this one is a decent deal at $27

what ever you choose, don't forget a dose or two of any personal meds you or a partner take regularly or in an emergence medical need.

I am not a huge fan of the prepackaged kits because the items are typically single use. (referring to the boo-boo kit) We carry a "Boo-boo kit" and a "Trauma kit" whenever we go shooting. For our Girl Scout outings / hikes we each had a little belt pack (camera case sized) with bandaids, a pair of gloves, antibiotic ointment, wound wipes and some pain reliever (tylenol) Mine has morphed and both kits include steri-strips to close a larger laceration and assorted bandage sizes. The big kit has Israeli bandages and the "big stuff" in it, as well as a tourniquet. I have a tourniquet in my car as well.

If you have the opportunity to take a first aid for range safety course I highly suggest it. We have taken 2 now, and learned a ton from both. They helped us decide what to carry, and how to safely and correctly use the tourniquets. I have medical training as a nurse, but we were taught "tourniquet bad!"; however, as with technology, things change, as has the practice/theory behind tourniquets.

I know you asked about a boo-boo kit, I am sorry I got off on a tangent - oh look squirrel!!

I tried a few pre-made kits, but I think you will find that you're best bet is going to be building your own, to include a belt carry-able version and a car version.

In your line of work you are bound to know a few EMT's, nurses, doctors, etc. Ask them for a couple of their supplies like alcohol prep pads, swabs, gauze patches, wound dressings, etc. Then go to the store and get some a small tube of neosporin (or look for the "single use" versions and throw a couple of those in), get a decent assortment of bandages (variety box with the knuckle and fingertip ones too), and get a nice little selection in there. Add in a small medicine vial (those gas station 10 pill ones work great) to keep some ibuprofen, a couple antacids, benedryll, etc. Then hit up a local fast food joints or store that sells single use sanitary moist towlettes or a small bottle of purell and some gloves. Toss in tweezers and small scissors, and you have a way better kit than the standard per-packaged versions.


Its amazing how good of a kit you can fit in a small camera case.

Galls has a good selection at http://www.galls.com/first-aid-kits" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. They also sell more advanced kits for trauma, basic life support, and advanced life support. If you have $4500 or so to spare, they will even sell you a fairly nice gurney.

Two things I always carry. (I am a Paramedic). I have a pair of EMS gloves and a sharp knife with a locking blade. You will be more inclined to help a bloody/body fluids covered stranger if you have those gloves. The sharp knife will let you pop a car window (watch a you tube video on this), cut a seat belt, remove clothing, fashion a tourniquet/bandage out of clothing. Someone with a bullet wound needs a surgeon more than anything. You might stop the blood from coming out but you can't stop the internal bleeding.

In a normal person, the only way air gets in the chest (lungs) is through the mouth/nose. If you have a bullet hole in the chest, air can be pulled into the chest cavity through that hole when you inhale. This air will cause the lung to collapse and maybe even put pressure on the heart. You can use your gloved hand to cover the hole and this might help. Even a hard blow to the chest (hit by fist, ball, hitting the steering wheel in a crash, etc) may cause the lung to pop like a balloon. This too can cause severe breathing problems that will require a Paramedic or higher.

AND NEVER...I repeat NEVER put a tourniquet around the neck to stop head bleeding. And all bleeding will eventually stop.

when the kids were little we kept a prepacked kit from Sam's in our car, I can't tell you how many times that came in handy, we would refill it with extra band-aids, I think we added tweezers and scissors? I can't remember now. but it's a great place to start.

I recommend MedicalGearOutfitters. His basic kits are (in my opinion) priced very reasonably, and while his trauma ('blowout') kits are more spendy, I still think that they are reasonably priced for what they come with. On top of that, he puts out videos on Youtube on general first aid issues which as a layperson I've found really helpful. I believe he is an EMT, and everything he puts into his kits are based off of the items that he has used, or uses on a daily basis in his job, so the kits only have quality items in them, not just random items from the lowest cost provider that a store bought kit might have.
