I have been looking at the Springfield xdm subcompact, I have always wanted a sig p229. How hard is the sig p229 to conceal?

Just like anything else; you dress around it. I don't carry a 229, but I have concealed some pretty big guns. Are you used to concealing a weapon, or would this be a first?

I can conceal a Springfield XDm 4.5, and a Glock 19, IWB without an issue.
Just have to dress appropriately

This will be my first gun.

Then, just in case, dressing around means simply, wearing clothes that help hide the weapon.
Cant wear tight shirts, pants, shorts, etc, a shirt, especially, with some 'play' in it, will be a bit poofy and help hide the grip of the weapon.
also shirts with patterns on them, will hide the 'lines' where the grip hits the shirt,

Get a good holster and a good gun belt

Don't have any experience with a 229. I have shot a 239 and I would think it would be pretty easy to conceal. It was very similar to my S&W 908s in size and I can conceal that pretty easy. I have also shot a 220 carry that was nice but it is a lot bigger. Needless to say I am a fan of sig single stacks.

I have Sig P226. When I carry it, I wear it on my hip under a sportcoat or (in the fall/winter) under a windbreaker or jacket. If I decide not to wear an overgarment, I can actually slip it in the small of my back and tuck my shirt in around it. It isn't noticible. If I can do that, I'm pretty sure you can do the same with a p229

The biggest issue you are probably going to run into with the 229 is that in addition to being fairly thick, it is really heavy.

Assuming you have a decent holster and belt, how easily concealed it is will depend mostly on your body type and style of dress.

I love my 229, it is my favorite gun to shoot, hands down. I carry it sometimes, but I would honestly probably recommend you get something a little less bulky for your first carry gun. If you like Sigs, you might see how you like the 239, it is another great shooter if the grip is a good fit for your hands.

I only say this because when you first start carrying you are already going to be spending an inordinate amount of time worrying about printing and trying to figure out what works for you and what doesn't. To add a big brick of a gun on top of that might be a recipe for frustration.

Just my opinion, of course.

I carry a Sig P229 IWB at about 4:00 in a kydex holster. It works.

FWIW, my wife's XD SC 40 has a shorter barrel, but the width isn't that different in the barrel and the double-stack grip doesn't matter because it's not tucked into the waistband. The length of the barrel doesn't matter much in 3" vs. 4" if you carry IWB. The main way to get a slimmer gun is to go 1911. I also have a full size Kimber but no holster.

I carry a P229 9mm. I'm a little guy, and it isn't hard for me to conceal. I'm moviing up to the larger P226 because it feels better in my hand.

Can't be any more difficult than a Glock 21. I concealed that for around 8 months before switching to my G30.

I have carried the 229 for almost four years IWB, and OWB. :hurry: It only requires your clothing choices be made around the gun v/s choosing clothes first, then gun.

I have the XD-SC, and the SIG P229 SAS as my carry guns.
I feel the P229 a little more, it is heavier. Other than that, no issues.

I carry a 229SAS in a Kramer IWB at the 3:30 with no concealment or comfort problems other than the grip sanding my love handles away; might even conceal better in a MTAC (which I highly recommend, btw). Dress around the gun.
