Gonna use a small gun as my main carry.

Post by Dallas »

I have tried to carry my Sig P250C 40 cal concealed for the past 4 months IWB and it has been awkward. Bought a tactical belt, but still had the feeling of pants falling down. I recently bought a Taurus Pt738 TCP .380 with a pocket holster and it has been perfect. Yeah, I know it's going to be more challenging to make it a more effective carry, but I feel better with it.

That's okay. I carry a small gun too. Glock 30SF. It's much smaller than the 21SF I carried around for 6-8 months before finally switching over to the little one.

G30 is NOT a small gun. It's smaller than...say.... a G21 though! LoL. I love the G30... I carry it a lot!

I carry an IWB Ruger LC9 at 4:30 and love it. It is the most comfortable carry I have worn. When running out for just a second & not feeling like messing with the holster, I can put it in any pocket. In the back pocket of Levis the mag just barely shows. The gun has rounded and tapered edges and doesnt hang up going in or out of a holster or a pocket. Ive got about a 1000 rounds through it.

Jim. Have you done any trigger work with your LC9? I love how the LC9 fits my hand and it's size but the trigger was not very good on the few I've held and shot.

Not yet, but I probably will. Ive learned to stage my shots & on a good day I can group 6" at 20'. (I dont have many good days  )Some of my problem is that I wear mono vision contacts and dont keep them clean.

For those who arent familiar:
With monovision, the eye that sees well for distance vision will be slightly blurred up close and the eye that sees well up close will be slightly blurred when looking at distant objects. But with both eyes open, typically the result is acceptably clear and comfortable vision at all distances.
http://www.allaboutvision.com/contacts/monovision.htm

Mono vision also messes with depth perception; but still beats the dickens out of glasses.

The trigger pull takes some time to get used to. Galloway offers a trigger kit with a shorter bar that reduces travel to about 1/2. This would probably help the average user quite a lot, not sure how much for me; but every little bit is worth the effort.

Youre right about how well the gun fits the hand (with the finger extension) & I have above average hand size. The very first time I picked it up it was "bingo", I then I slid it into my pocket and we've been together ever since!

I was in the same camp as you. I fell hard for the Sig P238. I shot it well at 5 yards. Carried it everywhere. Felt safe and sound. Then Aurora happened. I traded it for a Glock 21 Gen 4. Some things change in your life and in mine the 380 no longer left me feeling safe. I do not carry the 21 (yet). I've been carrying my 17 since I woke up that next day. It's not a comfortable CCW, but it's comforting.

That's a big change.

Yes. Yes it is.
And if you don't already have a good gun belt, get one. It will be a little more comfortable.

Are you going to shoot small people only? Try a different style of carrying like a belly band or kangaroo carry. Then there are always suspenders.

There is a post on here somewhere that I guy was in a shootout with a cop and a civilian from two different angles and it took some 5-7 bullets to take him down. Then there was the old man in the internet café he shot 6 times hitting two of the robbers and they still ran off so when.

A 380 is not for me, at least not in a self-defense situation

This may or may not help.

Even a Chihuahua or Pug can scare away some BG or keep them from breaking in your house. But, if they actually come in, would you rather have a Pug or a German Shepherd Dog, Rottie, or Malinois? There are, of course, many other large breeds that would suffice, but I picked these three because they are typically used by LE, maybe not the Rotties that much anymore here in the U.S., and many of our SD weapons are also used by LE. There's a reason why the police use what the use.

When you wake up in the morning, how do you know if you will be in a threatening situation that day?

I suppose carrying more gun is one solution, but if I knew in advance, I would rather avoid the trouble spot.

If you're carrying in a known threat situation, bring a rifle.

a small gun might be ok, but one can carry a smaller gun and still carry a good caliber.... might recoil a little

.380 Taurus PT 738 TCP weighs 10.2 ounces
9mm Diamondback DB9 Weight: 11 Ounces
.45/9mm 12 oz Aluminum http://heizerfirearms.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://www.theblaze.com/stories/heres-t ... ry-pistol/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
9mm Kel-Tec PF9 is 12.7 ounces
9mm Rohrbaugh R9 is 12.8 ounces

Kahr PM9
length 5.3 inches,
height: 4.0 inches

compared to similar sized .380s

Kel-Tec P3AT Ruger LCP Taurus 738
Length 5.14" 5.172" 5.195”
Height 3.576" 3.612" 3.625”

about a tenth of an inch length and less than 4/10 of an inch in height ... to carry a 9mm instead of a .380
