oponion's on a 7.62x39

#1

Post by ixslr8 »

so i've been looking at getting a 7.62x39. This would be mainly used for a range plinker with occasional hunting thrown in. my budget is sub $1000. My first thought was a mini 30 for a couple of reasons. I grew up shooting bolt rifles, so i'm used to the stocks/ergos of them a lot more than the "assault" rifle feel. I've had several ar's and two ak's and they were just never as comfortable to shoot as a bolt gun for me. To me the mini 30's ergo's more match a bolt gun than an ak. On the other hand does anyone have any experience with a ptr 32. http://www.ptr91.com/products/PTR32KC?id=15" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I've never shot a cetme or a clone of one so i'm not at all familiar with how they shoot? are there any other options in 7.62x39 besides an ar or ak? Do they make fal's in 7.62x39?

They even make a bolt gun in 7.62x39 if you want to just go for it:

Have you tried a Saiga (AK variant) in its imported form?

Their triggers aren't fantastic in import form, but if you don't like the feel of an AR or AK, this will get you AK ruggedness in a different stock.

No experience with the PTRs, so can't offer an opinion there.

Love my Chinese SKS with a synthetic stock! That aftermarket stock makes it feel much more comfortable to me since it's about an inch longer than the original wooden one. Might be worth looking at one.

+1 on the SKS. They are a great choice when the ergos and/ or capacity of an AK variant aren't decision drivers.

What do you think about that CZ bolt-action rifle in 7.62x39mm? I saw that before and was curious about it. What do you think the accuracy would be like with that cartridge out to say, 100 yards?

Haven't shot one, but CZ has a reputation for making excellent rifles.

I've heard good things about it from others who do have it though.

I'd pick one up if I had the funds to just buy whatever, but at this point if I get a bolt gun its going to be in .308 or something like that.

SKS rifles were a great deal when they were less than $100. Even at $150 they're a pretty good deal. Lately I see prices higher than $200 and at that price they're not worth it to me. Other people think different or they wouldn't be selling at those prices.

I had forgotten about sks's. Just have few questions. They are a fixed mag? 5 round? Will it shoot accurate enough for pig hunting at 150 yrds max with russian steel case ammo? Who makes the best sks? Can you mount optics on obe? How much are the mounts if you can?

I have an original rusted old 5 or 10 round sks mag somewhere and sold all my 20, 30, 40 round detachables years ago. I only kept three 50 round (really they hold 52 rounds) detachables for hunting and stuff.

How much for scope stuff I couldn't tell you now, I did mine in early 1980s for a 50 round deer rifle just before the assault weapon ban "rlol" ; should work ok for hogs too. Who makes the best? ... I dunno, no one agreed in the 70s/80s.

I just saw them SKS rifles at gun shows in a wooden barrel for $89.00 each (early 1980s) and stocked up for later. I only have my deer rifle left, traded all the other pre-ban ones long ago (though the "ban" expired anyway, it was profitable to own ones grandfathered in to trade for other stuff)

I haven't shot one myself, but I've heard very good things about the VEPR rifles.

I owned a mini 30, I made it look like my SKS "assault" rifle (whatever that means) in a folding composite stock, with 30 round magazine when I made my military surplus sks into a deer rifle for hunting and sporting purposes... resulting in 2 rifles using the same cartridge, similar in capacity a domestic-made "assault weapon" which wasn't illegal and a "military Viet Nam war surplus" deer rifle which would have been illegal to import ... because of how each looked. :smilelol5:
The mini 30 was less accurate but prettier.

SKS fixed mags are 10 rd. Chinese made some fixed 20 rd ones. I have one but never used it. I still have 4 or 5 detachable 30s and maybe a 20. I used them at first but came to appreciate the fixed 10 rd because they work so smooth with 10 rd stripper clips. I've seen scopes and mounts pretty cheap at gun shows but I never bought one. I've heard they work good.

for the money mentioned (under $1000), and a fun/hunting gun, I'd have to go with the new Ruger Scout rifle in .308. But, I don't care much for commie ammo or commie chamberings much anyway.
