Hey guys,

I have a couple pistols now and I'm looking for a holster (or two) for each of them. I had been using the "free" holster that came with my XDm, but it's not really something I could wear anywhere but the range. I was given a IWB holster for my Glock 19 when I got it, but that one is falling apart.

I have a Springfield XDm and a Glock 19, and I'm looking for a way to carry them around. Was thinking maybe one OWB for the range and one IWB for carry, but then again there's no reason I can't carry with a OWB or use a IWB at the range. With an open mind, I visited my local gun stores looking. Both places told me the same thing..."Sir, our holsters are all crap"...

So, now I turn to the internet for advice and recommendations. I'm a large person (5'11", 255#) but dropping it over time. What do y'all think? Should I go with separate range vs carry holsters? Any good recommendations that aren't crap but won't break the bank?

I see no need for an OWB for specifically for range use. Practice with what you will carry. I am sure you will get a lot of suggestions about super tucks, but I haven't used one so I can't comment.

Mostly I carry OWB with a Kramer MSP. During the summer, a shirt over the gun/holster provides good concealment for me. The design of the Kramer is very comfortable. The disadvantages are the high price [$180] and long delivery time [10-12 weeks]. After buying my Kramers I have a holster drawer with 10 empty holsters guarding my dresser.

I carry a MaxTuck from http://www.whitehatholsters.com/Default.asp. Mine is Horsehide with black kydex, but they also offer cowhide and many color and pattern choices for the kydex. The advantage that white hat has over the SuperTuck is in the interchangeable kydex, mounted to the backing with screws and nuts, so you can buy one holster for the Glock, and extra kydex for the XDm, so you can carry either one. I carry a Taurus Public Defender in mine, it is comfortable, concealed, and easy to draw from. Tony and Sam are good people to deal with, and they are local to me (Arlington, Tx), so I just drove over and picked my holster up when it was ready.

I have a MaxTuck from white hat holsters for my S&W M&P and a SuperTuck from Crossbreed for my Glock 26 and Beretta PX4, both are great IWB holsters and worth the money, white hat was a little faster with shipping. I went through a bunch of cheaper holsters from the local gun stores and bigger chains before deciding to finally order these and the difference in comfort and conceal-ability is great, its well worth it.

I have no objections to using multiple holsters but I do have one word of caution. Make sure you wear and practice extensively with your carry holster while you are at the range. A better way is to ensure that both holsters use the exact same release methods.

When you are really in need of the weapon, you have to be able to draw without thinking about it. If the holsters work differently, your hand may act like the wrong one at the worst possible time. Since you will spend much more time using the range holster, guess which one will become habit and used under stress?

Funny, I just joined the crowd: a Crossbreed Supertuck for my full sized M&P, but a White Hat for the Walther PPS.

I'd ordered a CBST for the PPS *and* the White Hat, figured I'd compare them & return the one I didn't like as much. I've been a happy user of the CBST for the M&P for 2+ years.

Found that the thinner leather on the White Hat made more sense for the little PPS; the thick leather on the CBST was great for my full size pistol, but just added bulk w/out benefit for the smaller PPS.

I am not related in anyway, just a customer -- I bought the horsehide/kydex holster with a pair of hooks over the belt (or just jeans for stealth. It is for my XDM 3.8c, and it supports the gun nicely. I know it is in place, but no one else does (not even wife). The horsehide is lined, so leather does not soak up sweat and no hardware touches my T shirt or skin.

To remove holster, I just use each hand, grabbing one of the belt clips, and take the tension off clip and lift upward and away from IWB. Cant is adjustable.

For concealed carry, unless you are going to be rolling around the ground, a retention device is unnecessary. I use both IWB and OWB holsters it depends on what I am wearing more than where I am going. I have two Supertucks with Combat Cut I also have a K Holster for a 1911 that I have trimmed to combat cut specs. For OWB I like the holsters that Don Hume makes they are usually in stock and are formed for your gun. Their quality is way above their price point.

Plenty of good holsters are available for both IWB and OWB. Companies such as Raven Concealment, Comp-Tac, Tucker Gun Leather, and Remora all offer good holsters that will suit your needs. Personally I use a Comp-Tac Spartan and find it to be excellent. However I am about to order a Raven Concealment Phantom also. Of the ones I mentioned Tucker is the most costly and Remora the least. So if money is an issue Remora is were I would start looking. If not then look around and find what suits you taste best. You really can't go wrong with any of the above mentioned companies.

On you OWB for range work comment. Why just the range. OWB can work equally well away from the range, it is all a matter of appropriate holster. As a matter of fact all the companies I mentioned offer OWB concealment holsters. So I suggest looking around and finding the holster(s) that suits you best. Also remember that one holster will not cover every need and variety is the spice of life. Thus your original concept of multiply holsters is a good one. There is a reason I have 5 holsters for my pistol. But there is also a reason I use the Comp-Tac 95% of the time.

Supertuck IWB for both my M&P and Glock

Don't worry about a "range" holster. Unless it is a private range, most/all won't let you draw and fire anyway. I carry to the range, disarm at the bench, change out carry ammo for range ammo, and shoot away. Public ranges also won't let you re-holster and keep it with you when the range is clear for changing targets and stuff.

I have used the holster kings $20 holster for appx 2 years, nearly everyday. Best $20 I have spent in firearms, period.

Seriously, though, they are somewhat maligned, but I like it and what I used for years with my G27 and now with my G21 & G30. I, too, just competed in my first IDPA match with it. I had heard that some clubs won't allow these, but the club I went to does. Cool.

I was warned about the potential safety issue with drawing while using the same trigger finger to move the button. The US Shooting Academy (my local range in OK) allows the serpas. I don't have the problem that many do with poor trigger-finger control. With a glock, that is my first, and basically only safety
