Looking for a new gun grease.

I've decided that I'm going to move away from oils and try a grease on my carry guns, especially my 1911s. What have you guys and gals had good luck with? I like the idea of something lasting longer and not evaporating into thin air.

Have you experienced a problem with oil? I'm just wondering what has precipitated this desire to switch to grease. I've been using Rem Oil for 10 years now without any problems.

No, not particularly, but I'm starting to dig the idea of greasing what slides and oiling what pivots. I use remoil and eezox as well but would like to try a good moly grease for slide to frame contact.

FWIW, that last two pistols I have bought both came with a small packet of grease and directions on how to use it on the slide. I figure if that is what the manufacturer (Sig) is now pushing, then who am I to argue. I have used oil for years on all my rifles, shotguns and pistols without apparent problem but I am willing to try something new. I just just bought a tube of Hoppes grease, but have yet to use it. The small packet they sent with the pistols goes a long way.

I also use Eezox, and it's great stuff, particularly for inhibiting rust. It's all I use on my seecamp. I don't think that dry eezox is going to be reliable with the tight tolerances that my sti has, and was thinking something that sticks around a bit longer may be a better bet, or at least make me feel better about it. Fun experiment anyway!

I was having serious issues with my carry piece until I used it.

Militec-1 is a synthetic that works best if you heat everything up before you apply.

I put the slide, barrel, and lug into my toaster oven for a little "top brown". It takes less than a minute for your parts to get too hot to touch. I removed everything and then applied a thin layer on the areas that rub. I haven't had any type of malfunction at all for the past two years...nothing. My Cougar just runs and runs no matter what I feed it.

Later, after I started shooting IDPA, I noticed that some of my mags wouldn't fall free. A fellow club member suggested that I do the same thing with the mags but after the grease was on and they cooled off, wipe them down as best I could or else the mags would collect dust. The tiny little bit that bonded with the metal of the slide would be enough for the mags to drop free and he was right. Before, there was always one or two that I had to shake the pistol in order for them to fall out. Now, they all just fall out quickly.

I'm pleased.

If you want to try grease just get some grease. I've used wheel bearing grease, moly grease (cheap! you can get a giant tub) and a few gun-specific greases out there. They all work well. I'm going to move away from the Moly-grease I have right now. It's a black colored grease and its hard to tell if it's dirty or not. I recently picked up something called "froglube" but I'm putting that through it's paces right now.

I'd get some wheel bearing grease and add it to your kit. $5 will get you a lifetime supply and it works for more than just guns. If you find it doesn't work well, move to some of the gun-specific products as they seem to be a bit thinner than the auto oriented greases.

I've found that grease picks up a little more debris than oil does. It stays put longer though and it has much better wear-reducing qualities on sliding parts.

I've been using it alot on motorycle stuff and got curious.
