Marlin 336 and hornady ammo

Went to the range yesterday and shot my marlin 336w and had a round fire and then I was unable to eject it and by unable to eject I mean the lever would even move. When the gunsmith pulled the round out he said there was some really high pressure indicators and showed me a ring of brass around the inside of the barrel. I don't know all the techinical terms and I definatley don't want to press the panic button but I would be remiss not to mention this I still have the casing and will post pics tomorrow

What caliber Marlin 336?
Did you buy it new or used?

Ask your gunsmith to look at the firing pin in the bolt and see if someone had replaced the factory 2 piece firing pin and installed a single piece firing pin.

The factory 2 piece FP will not allow the gun to fire unless the round is fully chambered (lever fully flush against the stock).

A single piece FP will allow the gun to fire when the lever is away from the stock (round not fully chambered). This may have been your problem. The round may have fired without being fully chambered.

Some peeps change out the factory 2 piece FP to a single piece one because they can fire quicker with a single piece. But, there is the danger that they must ensure each round is fully chambered before touching the trigger.

If your gunsmith finds that the gun is stock (2 piece FP) then contact Hornady and let them know what happened. They will take care of you. It would be good if you had the box with the lot number of the ammo for their reference.

I don't know what factory ammo was being used, but the same thing just happened to my nephew.

He bought a new 336 from Independence. He noticed a stock crack, so they replaced it with another new 336.

This time, after firing, it was locked up just as you described. Independence is returning it to Marlin for him, so we'll never see the extracted casing.

Weird, happened to me Thursday with my Marlin 308SDT after about a dozen rounds. Did it once, then I fired another 20 or so rounds without issue. Might be taking it on an elk hunt next month, gonna have to run some more rounds through it and see if it happens again. I have put 6 boxes through it and this is the 1st problem I have, hope it's the last.

I also own a Marlin 336 that was built in 2008 and I have used over 4 boxes of the Hornady Lever Ev. ammo and have never had a problem. I have never seen signs of over pressure on the rifle or on the spent casings. One of two things, either there is a bad batch of Hornady going around or a bad batch of Marlin 336s in .30 .30. I would call Hornady and tell them what happened and the same with Marlin. I am personally guessing it is the rifle but post what you find out.

Thats the only one that makes ammo for it. 160 gr Lever Revolution.
