Confirming this conforms to their guidlines. Flying AA to Hawaii (HNL) on Sunday. Gun is unloaded. Will be packed in a softside (I know...all we have) suitcase which will also be locked.

Looks good. The only thing is that they might think the lock is too long allowing the case to be opened just enough to get the pistol out....you know how picky TSA can be.

If they get in the suitcase, they could just take the case. It's barely bigger than a dollar bill.

I've found that what is allowable is also variable from airport to airport. Declaration card on top of/inside locked case; ticket agent verifies/doesn't verify pistol is not loaded. This sort of thing. Continental (IAH) and SWA (HOU) have both told me that the box of ammo is not to be in the locked case with the firearm. As far as the case itself, you should be GTG. Just be prepared for the possibility that there may be some variation in the way they want it between the airport on this end and the airport on that end.

Thanks. They barely honor LEOSA. I have to go to HNL PD and register the gun within 72 hours of being there. I'm going to use it as an excuse to swap patches with them, but kind of irks me a little bit.

I reckon you're right. When I flew, I looped a steel cable through the innards of the suitcase and locked the case to that.

I know it is counter-intuitive, but that is how they require it.

As others said, that should be fine. My preference is a COM/Nanovault style but I have done the cheap plastic case with a padlock inside a semi-rigid roller bag on occasion. At the other end of the spectrum, I've used a med/lg Pelican case as luggage with a handgun inside. Technically speaking, the ammunition and magazines do not need to be inside the locked pistol case, but that keeps things organized.

Last time I flew, I had 250 rounds of .45 ACP in the suitcase, while the pistol was in the pistol case.

Dangit. Where do I get a TSA lock? I have just have a small gold master lock to loop through the zippers. Can I get it at the airport?

Also - should I leave the whole thing unlocked on the way up, and so I can do the whole show and tell thing for TSA?
