Where do police departments get their weapons? Do you buy from dealers or direct from manufacturers?

Both methods are known to be used. Sometimes a manufacturer will make a deal with a department, and then use a local dealer as a point of contact for service and support (warranty work, and as an armorer). Sig Sauer deals with a lot of departments directly (This is the largest source for their red box guns). I think one of the city the PDs in my county got their Kimbers Eclipse IIs from Kimber directly, although the SO here got their TLE IIs from an area Dealer who wanted to sell enough Kimbers to become an official Kimber dealer. The other City PD in my county doesn't buy guns at all, they expect the officers to supply their own gear.

As soon as i saw this topic GT came to my mind. They do sell to the public too and they have the best prices. That's where I buy. Police fire and EMS get special pricing on specific brands like glock and sig. They were 60 to 100 bucks cheaper with normal pricing.

Carrolls Guns in Wharton, Texas (just south of Houston on I-59) sells to LE, Fire and EMS personnel. I believe they only give deep discounts on Glocks. They will do mail order.

On the Fed level, the agencies contract directly with the manufacturer. In turn, the manufacturer trains several members of each using unit as armorers. My own outfit was the Border Patrol and at one time they were issuing S&W, Ruger and Colt products (all revolvers). Each Sector had at least two agents trained as armorers for each brand. That all changed when the standard issue sidearm became the Beretta 96D; it simplified matters. Now that the Italian Tomahawk has been discarded, the Border Patrol has maintained its love affair with another European product.

That is a great shop, and a great group of guys. I bought my Sub 2000 from Jim and Brick, back in December.
