need some help

A buddy of mine needs some money and wants to sell me a rifle. I know very little about rifles of this sort so anyone know what this is or a ballpark value?? He says its a British 7mm??

My guess is that it's a 'sporterized' 7mm Spanish Mauser circa 1895. The British used a .303 caliber and that picture ain't of an Enfield.
A local gun store should be able to....you know.

i havent seen it in person but i figure it would have to be pretty crappy not to be worth a couple hundred bucks.

Andy, he is a good enough friend that i will give him the money even if the rifle is worthless. i was merely curious if anyone would recognize the rifle. Maybe i should have posted on a gun forum......oh wait, this is a gun forum!
he is going to text me exactly what is on the barrel of it and i will post it up.

Does look Mauser-ish from the one pic, if he could get us some pics of the action that would help a lot.

That looks like a Model 1893 or 1895 Mauser, most probably chambered in 7x57 Mauser. It does look sporterized, but the rear sight leaf indicates it still has the original barrel. The 1893 and 1895 are, if I remember correctly, most easily differentiated by a half-moon cutout on the left side of the receiver to make loading easier; the 1895 has this, but the 1893 does not. Without seeing the markings, I can't tell where it's from; it could be Spanish, South American, or German.
It could also be chambered in .308/7.62x51. The Israelis got hold of and re-did a bunch of these into .308, a few decades ago, and a lot of them have found their way into the American market. Some people are leery of shooting these, as they were not designed for the .308; however, I own one and have not seen any problems with it.

You're aware that there can be many variants of the same type of rifle and that the value can go up or down 10-fold or more depending on markings, parts, etc? Apparently not - but that was
my concern in not wanting to see you get shafted seeing as you did ask for a "ballpark value" - or was I mistaken?

No, don't apologize - I'm sorry for not being willing to spend another man's money on a guessing game - but seeing as we now know that he was just joking about determining the value (ha...ha...), it's apparently a bit of a moot point now. While you're around, though, I need some advice:
