Anyone in the Austin area ever had any dealings at Sportsman's Finest. I am thinking of going there this week-end to look around and maybe buy something. I cannot put my finger on it, but I am getting kinda tired of buying at Cabela's and have to find someplace else.

I went to Sportsman's Finest once. The guy (young guy, supposedly the gunsmith) at the counter was uninterested and made me feel like I was wasting his time. The prices were inflated well beyond even the most expensive shops I've been to. I left (and decided not to return) after the "gunsmith" took a gun out from the counter, didn't check if it was loaded, and carelessly pointed it at me and every other person in the store. He just waved it around as if it was some kind of toy.

The shop is definitely on the expensive side. Unlike many gun shops however you can haggle on the spot about prices even for new stuff.

I would recommend visiting the Red's south location which is about 5 min drive from the Sportsman's first.

If you know exactly what you want you can buy it even cheaper through Lone Star's firearm range near Lockheart (they do not keep stock so either they order it for you or you order it and have them FFL transfer for $25 with CHL).

I would suggest Austin Gun Liquidators on the extreme north side. The guns are at a fair price and the selection is excellent.

I've been to Sportsman's Finest a couple of times - it's not far away from my home - but I've never purchased a gun there. My impression is that they're MORE expensive than McBride's.

But they have some cool stuff to look at. . . various suppressors, a twin .50 BMG, once a minigun, and a semi-auto 20mm cannon.

I ride down to Cabela's every Monday, agree with you, visiting Cabelas gets old.
Nice change (also, rub elbows with some of Ft. Hood's finest ) I find shopping at " Guns Galore " in Killeen (Hwy 195, few miles before you hit the intersection of I-190 ) is a welcomed change. Heck, you can't get outta' there under afew hours.
Dave, Fred ... etc, are very watchful, but a nice friendly bunch of guys.
Prices seem to be afew bucks higher, but they have everything and make your shopping easy.
I bought my Kahr CW40 there, pleased with the whole transaction !

Agree Sportsman's Finest prices are way too high I don't bother to go in there.

Austin Gun Liquidators and GT Distributors have best prices. Heritage Firearms 183 @ Anderson Mill just moved into new suite in same shopping center and occasionally has good used prices.

Cedar Park guns guys are knowledgable but prices are a bit high.

Red's also seems high priced on most things. And McBrides is usually high too.

I like Sportsmen's Finest.
I've only bought one gun there (Small, collectible) but enjoy just looking around the place.

Thanks for all the info guys. I will check some of these places. Just looking for a gun shop that is reasonable price wise. I guess most shops cannot beat the big box stores.

They are somewhat pricey on their guns, but they do have PMC .380 for $16 a box

This pretty much sums it up. Skip out on sportsmans finest if at all possible.

I occasionally go into Sportsman's Finest, partly because it's the closest to where I live. I also purchased my first shotgun there: a Mossberg Persuader!

I agree that the prices are a bit higher than most; however, the Persuader that I purchased was equal to most other shops. And the youngish clerk was very helpful.

When I bought that shotgun, I got a few boxes of "00" to get me started. Later, after I got home and started becoming familiar with my new toy, my neighbor came over for a chat. Boy did I get a ribbing from him!!

You see, those boxes of shells were sent home in a cutesy little branded paper sack with handles. -- "Did you pick up some make-up while you were there?", he asked. "Or maybe a new pocketbook to go with your outfit?" "Did ya get a free perfume sampler with that?"

Next time, I'm asking for a camouflage bag... And spray a little deer pee on it!

I REALLY miss Sportsmans Warehouse which was up in Pflugerville off I-35. They had a good selection, good service and they also had a fair amount of reloading supplies. I especially liked the powder in 4# containers. There prices were not bargin basement but they had good sales. Also the powder was not the cheapest listed price but with no has-mat fee made it a good deal overall. Unfortunately I didn't discover it until just a short time before they began closing down.

Haven't bought anything at AGL or GT, but I've heard good things about them. USED to deal with Heritage under the original owners, but after the new guys shook me down for more money than agreed on for an internet transfer I swore I'd never darken their door again. (Since then, I've met a few other guys who'd had problems with them, too.)

I have a friend in Austin that wants to get a security pump shotgun...who you reccomend on that?
He was thinking cabelas...he is not a gun person so to speak either.Wants it for home security.
