Beretta CX-4 Storm

At the Mesquite Gun show this past weekend, I picked up a Beretta CX-4 Storm Rifle. I had never really noticed them before, but I immediately liked the gun, it is a nice size and had a good feel to it. I also like the fact that it uses handgun ammo. I don't own any rifles of any type and I now wonder if this would be a good first purchase. I'd be interested to hear some recommendations on this gun. What caliber? It's available in 9mm, .40 and .45.

I was interested in them as well at one time. I have a Beretta 92FS and the CX4 comes in a matching 9mm with 92FS mags. But for a matching rifle to a matched pistol for interchangeable magazines and ammo it is not a bad choice. But my goal was for a defense weapon better suited for my larger outside area where we live. Plus I wanted an ammo that would be less penetrating to additional walls and neighbors. So I chose to go the AR15 in 5.56 route. Fits the home defense and other issues better. Make sure you know what you want the rifle for before buying your first one I think. Just a suggestion.

The Storm is a fun little rifle. Its odd shape is what kept it off of the so-called "Assault Weapon Ban" list. That funky little strap of material that connects the bottom of the pistol grip to the stock is what kept it from having a “pistol grip” and therefore falling into that sinister group called the Evil Black Rifle. A lot of owners simply cut that piece off. It serves no structural use and you won’t miss it.

I always thought of the Storm as the modern version of the old west mentality of having both rifle and pistol use the same ammo. With the addition of using the same mag as one of the most popular pistols on the planet, mag availability will never be an issue.

If you really want to spend some time reading about them, hop over to the Beretta forum. According to some of those folks, the Trinity should have had a 4th leg and it should have been called Beretta. "The Father, The Son, and The Holy Ghost all carry a Beretta" :hurry:

Seriously though, that forum is the best place to learn about all Beretta firearms and is a great group. You will also probably find a good deal on a Storm in their classifieds.

I'm not sure I agree with gwashorn's statement about 5.56 not penetrating walls. We should all have a shotty loaded with #4 bird shot for those worried about penetrating the sheet rock. The real answer of course is to simply not miss. :coolgleamA:

I have one and it's a great little shooter. What attracted me to it, more than anything, is that you can rig it for left handed operation. Which is handy in a short carbine, if you're a lefty.

Something else I noticed at the weekend is, due to the sight geometry and top rail placement, you can get the iron sights to co-witness with a red dot - which is neat.

That's actually true with the AR as well. The first step in sighting in your Aimpoint is to sight in the irons, then mount the Aimpoint and simply line the dot up with the iron sights.

Oops, I hijacked. :evil2: :evil2:

Ditto on the AR in 5.56.

The Storm may be functionally a great little weapon, but the styling leaves me cold. It looks like a Super Soaker.

Ive shot them before and really liked it. I would prefer it in a 9mm since the ammo is cheaper and youd go through alot of ammo in a hurry but really fun to shoot.

Ah, let me edit or correct my comment on wall penetration. The 9mm will typically pass through "approximately 3 standard inside room walls of sheetrock on both sides of a 2x4 stud assuming it does not hit a stud and will impact the forth wall and may pass through. The 5.56 after the first two is pretty much broken up and will be bits and pieces when it hits the third wall. Hence not much chance of hitting others in my house which are 5 walls away. Great tests can be seen of this in various locations online and TV.

Regardless, I still think the CX4 looks like a fun gun to shoot and match up to a pistol, either the 92F or a PX4 I think.

My brother-in-law has one in .45. I like it a lot. It is accurate, and very easy to point and manipulate in tight quarters. I am going to get one in either .40 or 9mm for my wife. Personally, I am a shotgun guy for HD, but my Saiga kicks way too much for the Misses. The .40 is a soft shooter on the shoulder and still packs plenty of punch. I do like the extra capacity of the 9mm though, so I am a bit torn. This is a really nice weapon, though probably not everyone's cup of tea. I have been considering the FN p90, but it is just so darn odd looking that I can't quite get over the hump.

My wife got me the CX-4 (9mm) for Christmas this past year. I have both of the Storm pistols (PX-4 and PX-4SC, both in 9mm) and just had to have the carbine to complete the set. I absolutely LOVE it. It's easy and fun to shoot and surprisingly accurate. The design definitely gets attention whenever I'm at the range. There's tons of extra add-ons to make it look even cooler. So far I've added a barrel shroud and a red-dot sight. :thumbs2: I definitely recommend it.

Can you add rails to attachments such as a tac light?

Yep. It comes with a top rail plus a short side rail that you can fit. You can also buy a side/bottom rail combo.

Here is a pic of mine. It has rails on 4 sides. The cool one is the bottom one, it slides out the front if needed. Mine is in 9mm and is very accurate. Some versions share with the Px4 and some share with the 92fs so have to see which mags you need. I do want to trade mine for a .45 so I have one less caliber to stock. I only have 2 9mm left, other being a Calico M950. Another nice feature is they can be made lefty or righty. Definitely get the barrel shroud though as the barrel looks silly sticking out. I am sorely tempted to SBR mine, or silence it (legally).
