Are Black Talon ammo illegal ??? Are these the armor piercing rounds? Anyway, can anybody give me a heads up/specs about this ammo/

The are legal and are not AP rounds.

They are also a 15 year old design and are not particularly effective. There are better rounds out there with current designs.

Well sort of, the Ranger is a much tweaked version of the BT. It is actually a much better bullet now than back when the BT was the "latest and greatest." Even in the day there were better performing designs out there Hydrashock was one of them.

Some of the best performing loads today, in no particular order are: Gold Dot, Golden Saber, HST, Winchester Ranger, and DPX I would not feel at a disadvantage carrying any of these loads providing they function in my gun.

Now, what's the black stuff on the BT are they hot loads like the +P's..

You now have an adequate weapon. +P just causes added wear to your pistol, and added expense to you. Get proficient with standard JHP. The key word is PROFICIENT.

I believe the coating is called black loblox. It has lubricating properties to enhance decrease friction and increase velocity. I don't think they are particularly hot - maybe back in the day, but definitely not by today's standards. They are mostly a novelty item now-a-days with the prices so outrageously high. I try to collect a box in each caliber if I see one for $20 or less at gunshows, etc.

Thanks and I am happy with my load.. Got no plans of using BT's and/or +P.. Just got curious because I got talking to a guy in the last gunshow and he was teliing me "fish stories" and I would not bore ya'll with his tales...+1 on proficiency..

LOL, I read that the other day and thought it was pretty darn funny. I have not read any of the Anti blab about Ranger XTP!? I prefer Gold Dots myself, but keep a box of the Rangers in my closet out of pure spite

I'm not sure if you were messin' around, but it's SXT - Same 'Xact Thing.

And there is a noteworthy distinction to be made in the SXT line. AS I UNDERSTAND IT, there is the Winchester Ranger and the Winchester SXT line. There are various loads marketed under the Winchester Ranger SXT name, but for our purposes they are still Rangers. The NORMAL Winchester SXT round - the type that comes in the black box and is not "law enforcement only" - is NOT the same 'xact thing as the Ranger design. It seems the two bullets are designed slightly different and test/ballisitc data is available for the Ranger line. However, Winchester apparently never did the same testing or gathered proper ballistic data for the over-the-shelf Winchester SXT round. As such, we cannot assume the performance results will be identical and, in my opinion, the STANDARD Winchester SXT round is not suitable for carry. It may work just fine and I'm sure it would kill the BG just as dead, but I like to know the company who made my carry load actually put some research and testing into the final product.

Having said that, the Ranger line is my choice carry load in most calibers.

Also, as many others have already pointed out, in either case it's not quite the same 'xact thing - the Ranger line is cutting edge stuff that runs side by side with gold dots and all the other top modern loads. Black Talons, on the other hand, are an antiquated design that can't hang with today's modern loads.

I prefer Speer Gold Dots. They're the most common among law enforcement and they're much easier to come by than the Winchester Rangers are (and cheaper too).
