Should have used a revolver for my CHL test

#1

Post by Tallinthesaddle »

Sure would have saved a lot of money$$$$$$$ ! I decided this today when I tried out a new Ruger GP141 .357 revolver. This thing is an excellent shooter, perfect sight picture, and recoil is low using .38 Special.
But, instead I went the semi auto route for the CHL. Alias, one is not enough so I purhased a few others over the last two years. There went the money$$$$$, different ammos (when you can get it) to stock up on, a drawer full of holsters, and extra magazines for each pistol!!!! I have set aside February as the month not to buy anything. Probably now going to have to start a gun owners anonymous meeting group!
I wonder what is the percent of CHL owners who qualified with a revolver? Less than 10%?

I qualified with a pistol as you can carry both pistol and revolver if you qualify with pistol. If you qualify with revolver, you can only carry revolver..... why limit your future options.

I find that rule odd, but hey, it is the rule.

We have been doing this for a few years now, and our experience has been that less than 2% of students qualify with a revolver.

The 12 Suggested Steps of Gun Owner Anonymous

We admitted we were powerless over the ownership of firearms and that our lives had become really swell because of it..

Came to believe that a Firearms Manufactors greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of Smith and Wesson, Colt, Sig Arms, Glock, etc..

Made a searching and fearless inventory of our gun safes and all of our hideout places.

Admitted to God, to ourselves and to other gun club members the exact nature of the firearms we really like.

Were entirely ready to have a good gunsmith remove all these defects in any pistol, shotgun or rifle we own.

Humbly asked God and the Range Master to remove our shortcomings in sight alignment, breath and trigger control.

Made a list of all persons we should have harmed, and became willing to do what is right by them before we go to the big range or game preserve in the sky.

Made direct shots at such targets wherever possible, except when to do so would only wound them or others.

Continued to take personal inventory of our firearms and when we have not purchsed a firearm in which we were wrong in not doing, so promptly admitted it.

Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious shooting ability, as we understood it, praying only for better knowledge and ability to keep all shots in the ten ring and the power to carry that out.

Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to gun owners and especially non gun owners and to practice these principles in all our daily affairs.

Why do some here think the word 'pistol' applies only to semi-autos?

I wonder where this misinformed idea came from?

Anyone know?

Pistol defined: A firearm that is held and fired with one hand

A revolver is also a pistol.

In the old West, gunslingers were often referred to as 'Pistoleros' - they're weren't packing semi-autos. They were carrying big ole revolvers. Semi-autos hadn't been invented yet...

So, what is my Glock? A rifle? I fire it with two hands.

I attribute the phenomena to the 'law of shifting definition'. (I just made it up btw). I agree with you Abraham...a pistol is a pistol is a pistol. There are different classifications of pistols: revolver, semi-automatic and single shot.

I think the word pistol morphed into the conception of semi-autos only recently to make it easier to say than semi-auto. Personally I find the morphing confusing.

At one time "pistol" was synonymous with "handgun". It appears now days that "pistol" is generally accepted to mean "semi-automatic".

Wilkpedia gives a pretty good run down on how the change in terminology....changed.

Back on topic. I'd much rather have the option of selecting what type of handgun I can legally carry. I think most of us would. Using a revolver to qualify with will limit your choices of carry guns forever, unless you re-qualify with a semi-auto.

Just my $.02 worth.

joe817,

Thank you for the update.

I guess, when once I shuffle off this mortal coil the word pistol may have evolved to strictly encompass semi-autos only, but right now, as at least you and I know, it applies to all handguns as it has for a VERY long time.

Hear Ye - Hear Ye: A revolver is a pistol. A semi-auto is a pistol too and it's also a handgun, as is a revolver. There are other names also applicable to revolvers and semi-autos like sidearm, etc.

That is all.

P.S. Snubbie = baby talk
Wheelgun = cool guy wannabe speak

I can't imagine why someone would want to qualify with a revolver and limit themselves. I guess there are autophobes out there that would never touch anything without a cylinder. I don't understand the rule though-How can they assume that because I qualified with an auto I automatically understand what to do with a revolver, and not vice versa? And would they prosecute you for a restriction code violation?

There are those folks that already own a revolver, and never plan on buying anything else. They will shoot and qualify with their own weapon. As Crossfire said though, it is only about 2% of their students on average.

I know a guy like that who has had a Taurus snubby .38 for years and that is his gun, and the only gun he's interested in. I still think it's weird to be satisfied with just one gun. Still, he wants to get a CHL and qualify with an auto. I absolutely love the look and the feel of a revolver, but I just can't get over the terrible round capacity for defensive carry.
