I'm sure to get a lot of comments on this. I'm torn between the SA XD45 and the M&P .40. I have shot neither gun, but I like the feel of the M&P in my hand. But again the XD is nice as well.

Comments or recommendations?

I have shot both the 40 and 9mm M&P quite a bit. Both are good guns but the M&P stands out for a couple of reasons:

1. The bore is lower in the hand than the M&P. This allows for better recoil control because there is less whip when the gun goes off.

2. Adjustable grip allows for better fitting of the gun to the hand.

3. It is double action and does not have the grip safety of the Springfield. You can manipulate the slide without having to depress the safety. Also, if for some reason you miss your grip, the gun will still fire.

4. The M&P has a steel frame encased in a polymer envelope rather than steel inserts in a polymer frame.

Shoot them both and make your choice.

I lean more towards the SA XD45ACP although I have not shot the M&P.

I have both the SA XD-9 and the XD-45acp, and they both shoot really well, plus I really like having 13+1 of .45 in one hand.

I like the grip safety of the XD along with the USA trigger (trigger safety akin to the Glock) and while it (the XD) does not have an 'external' safety, these two plus an internal firing pin safety make me feel completely safe while handling these weapons.
