The idea of carrying at home has always seemed a bit much for me, until scenarios like the recent Missouri City home invasion make the news and forces me to consider the ever expanding home invasion/driveway/yard crimes...

I'm considering what firearm choice/carry would be the least in my way as I split firewood, chop out tree trunks, and any other hard labor/hand tool intensive thing I'm continually doing at home.

Plus, the gun choice has to be protected from flying wood chips/dirt/saw dust/chemicals and well, you get the picture.

And, how and where to carry on me.

I guess a fanny pack would work to some degree, yet, there's gotta be a better way.

I'm just not creative enough to come up with it.

Ideas anyone?

Personally , I always keep an LCP in the pocket . This comes in handy while knocking around the house/yard.
One of the main reason I purchased this gun was to be able to have a firearm on me at all times , especially while at home.

In your case , pocket carry will protect the gun from wood chips and other debris....Just a suggestion.

+1 LCP... I like mine with a belt clip (Kel-Tec P3AT clip) carried IWB, I can carry it in any clothing and it is barely noticeable and it is the one gun I can almost always have with me.

However, I tend to put on my carry rig with my clothes, so if I am going to be carrying the Kahr, then I carry it that day all day until I go to bed whether I am at home or out and about. So whichever gun I am carrying that day, I put it on when I get dressed and take it off when I go to bed. Around the house I also (as of yesterday) have a 12ga shotgun and at least two other pistols stowed around the house besides the one I am carrying on me. But you can't beat having a gun at hand on your person at all times.

Since I'm going to be in and out during the day (self employed, office at home), I just buckle on whatever I'm going to be carrying that day when I get dressed in the morning. On the rare day when I'm not going to be going out, I'll stick a 642 in my back pocket.

Depends on clothing choice of the day. If I'm around the house alone and wearing jeans or regular shorts could be one of the Kahrs or SP101 IWB or drop the Kahr in cargo pocket.

A 642 in a Mika's pocket holster will fit your needs. Doesn't matter if it gets nasty, fast out of the pocket, inexpensive, and really light enough to forget you have it with you.

Dittos on the LCP-I carry it 24/7 with an extra clip-all full of Speer Gold Dot JHPs. The LCP is like wearing a contact lense-you forget it. You may not hit a Luby's shooter 20-30 feet away, but a bad guy in your house that 5-10 feet away won't be a problem.

Speaking of bumming around the house with a "heater" (Sorry-I recently read "The Outsiders"), I saw a doohicky for $18 American at Austin Gun Liquidators that I may need for Christmas. It's a little leather magnetic pouch that looks like it's for Blackberry phone that an LCP, or comparable mouse fits right into; freeing you pockets up for keys, and mints from Sonic, without looking like a fanny-pack dork.

Now I'm not sayin' that I'm above a fanny pack if it's a matter of carrying, or not carrying.

I'd think any gun that's small enough for pocket carry. S&W 642, LCP, the little Kel-Tec P-3AT, Walther PPk, Mauser HsC.

I always carry my BHP the same way, in a Comp-tac CTAC holster, at home or not. I've dug ditches, bush-hogged (or I guess that's "shredded" in Texas), worked the horses, fought brush fires, etc etc. When I do something messy, I just make sure my shirt or jacket covers it, and when I am done double check the gun to make sure it isn't full of grit (or clean it if it is).

I don't like having multiple carry methods. I want to always know where my pistol is without thinking about it.

Considering that the OP was describing nasty, sweaty, physical working conditions, I do have a bit of experience along those lines. As a land surveyor I often have the occassion to fight my way through brush, thickets, creeks, etc., swinging a machete, carrying technical equipment.... or on occassions being on a dirty, dusty construction site where you almost need self contained breathing apparatus. Field conditions like that require that you have nothing bulky in your pants pockets, if you want to be able to move freely. Just my preference, I think there's nothing better than a J-frame in a high ride holster under a cover shirt for those conditions. And, given the possibility of needing to dispatch a copperhead, or it's distant cousin, there's nothing like keepinng the first round or two chambered with shot shells. The stainless/alloy J-Frame is very forgiving with the sweat, dirt and dust, and only requires an occassional wipe down.

For non-physical "around the house" carry, whatever fits the moment. I normally have the j-frame strapped on until I get out of the daily field garb, then it's either IWB, OWB or shoulder holster with Kimber, Sig or Kahr. Actually, in the winter months, I tend to gravitate to the shoulder holster. Even kicked back in the recliner, the shoulder holster is a breeze to acccess.

My personal opinion is that one is now as vulnerable at home as at the parking lot at wal-mart. Carry!

I bought a Glock 31(full sized 357sig) and a glock sport/combat holster (plastic $12) to carry it in. Mowing, chainsawing, shrub planting, oil changing, etc. It gets dirty, it gets wet, it gets cleaned once in a while. That's what Glocks are for. I've had to start wearing suspenders to keep my pants up but I should have done that a long time ago anyway.
It is my dedicated "yard gun", I don't carry it any place other than at home.

I just put a Kahr PM9 in my pocket in the morning and away I go. The main thing, I think, is that whatever you choose stay with it. Practice, practice, and stay with the same thing......I use a DeSantis holster and have no problems at all.

Ditto the LCP for working around the house....on the car...etc. It's better than nothing.
