Does anyone have a favorite target for shooting at the range?
Any recommendations of other places to shoot around Austin area that are not a paper target range?
Also any input about starting to reload? I am thinking about getting into it but what to see what exactly it takes to get started.
Thanks
Joe

What Andy said.
I'd recommend at least 2 loading manuals (Speer and Hornady) if you're serious & then maybe look for a starting 'kit' that has all the basics.
If you have the option I recommend starting with .38spl or 45ACP as good, easy to load, low pressure rounds.

thanks for all the input, I will look to pick up those manuals and would love to talk to someone about it when I have a chance.

If you have the opportunity to shoo on private property, I like water bottles filled with red Jello. Great visuals and you can really see the effect your gun will have.

I wish that I had somewhere to shoot on private property. I can only shoot paper so long before its boring, I know I can hit the target standing there at a specified distance shooting at 1 second per shot! Need to get some real practice

Have you considered IPSC (USPSA) or IDPA competition shooting?

I was looking at the KR website earlier tonight, someone at my job was telling me about him, and that he used to work with us.
I am wanting to go check out an event and see what it is like but they are not close to austin from what I found, correct me if I am mistaken

Yep, they are sorta N of Bastrop. It's a great place to train. Get to their defensive pistol class and then you'll find some work to do.
Different targets are good for different types of practice. The 1" are good for marksmanship, something like the IDPA target or the PDT or fbi Q target are good for a shooting fast or at distance.

Just did something similar for first time earlier this week. Was on some family land helping a friend site in a rifle that was given to him by another friend - older Ruger M77 in .223. Brought out my AR-15 and after we had both sited in, we started shooting at clay pigeons and full soda cans at 100 yards. Had never shot at FULL cans before - always drank the Dr. Pepper first before shooting the can with my .22 when I was a kid. It's a blast to watch those soda cans explode on impact. Quite a show. And interesting bits of shrapnel left over afterward too. If you're thinking of trying this, it helps to buy the wrong type of soda for your wife. Then you can say "oops, well I'll go to the store and get the right kind and I'll find a proper way to dispose of these others"

Pumpkins are my non paper target of choice. My aunt has a pomelo tree and she can never give all the fruit away. So I help her dispose of a good amount of them. They are a citrus fruit a little larger than grapefruit and explode nicely.
