Does Montgomery County S.O. have certain duty pistols and ammunition (caliber and type) that they are required by the department to carry? If so, does anyone know what they are or if this information is accessible to the public?

Well, it's been awhile, but I was a Deputy there about 12 years ago. Back then, if you could qualify with it, you could carry it (assuming minimum caliber of 9mm or .38). I don't remember if they had an approved manufacturer's list. I don't think so. Some carried 1911s, Sigs, Glocks, etc. I went through their academy in the summer of 1994 through Sam Houston St. Univ. I carried a S&W 6450 (essentially a 4506) that has been worked over by Novak's .45 Shop, and I also qualified on a Glock 19 for off-duty. I'm very proud to have earned this:

All of the Mongomery Co. Deputies I've come into contact with were carrying a variety of pistols. Glocks and 1911s seem to be the most common.

How about the same information on the Harris County Sherrifs Dept. MY daughter will be attending the academy there in February, in the meantime I want to get her a gun of her own, would like to get her something she can use for duty.

When I applied to Harris county 5 years ago it was carry what you qualify with. At least 9mm. They would issue a weapon. If I remember it was a S&W in 9mm.
Sorry it's not much, but it's the best I remember.

I think HCSO is pretty much anything goes, but I THINK that they have an approved manufacturers list. If so, it's got all of the major manufacturers on it. They just don't want someone to show up with a Rossi revolver. Actually, in my academy class, someone DID.

He had to borrow a Glock.

My daughter loves the G26, I am trying to convince her the 17 or the 19 is more suitable for duty. G26 is fine for off duty but I thought barrel length or capacity might preclude its use as a duty weapon.
