Cabela's VS McBrides prices

#1

Post by Embalmo »

Guys,

I've ordered a 2 inch blued Taurus 94 from McBride's for $311, but they can't seem to find a supplier to get one to them. Cabela's has, seemingly, the exact gun for $369, with the Ultralight over $400. I've looked all over the web and there are only four 2 inch models that I can find; blue 94, blue Ultralight, stainless 94, stainless Ultralight. My question is, what could make the gun from Calela's over $50 more than McBride's? Cabela's will match the price, but I suspect that something must be different for such a difference in price, like an accessory, or fancy grip, or a custom job of some sort. Any ideas?

Walk in Cabela's and stop just as you get past the second set of doors. Look to your left and do a 180 degree scan. :eek6 That's why Cabela's is more expensive. It's an amusement park for sportsmen.

Don't get me wrong, if I want it bad enough and nobody else has it....I go to Cabela's. Like ammo. They got it, but they are sure proud of it. The only thing I haven't seen in there is .380.

Like you, I would prefer trading at McBride's. Small, local, good selection, good service. But.... :fire

I would sell it for $200 if I did not have one also.

Seriously, I have always thought Cabela's was over priced on most of their weapons, but they do have them in stock. When i bought my daughter's rifle, i had the same problem. I tried to order it about four times and no one could get it. I went to Cabela's and they had it for about $25 more. I bought it and she was happy.

On the bright side for Cabela's is also their customer service. When I took my son in there for his first rifle, the salesman must have spent a least an hour letting him try different rifles and showing him some options. Two or three of the rifles he showed my son were not on display and he went and got them from the back room (side note - not all of their stock is visible so ask for what you want). For a salesman to spend that long explaining to a ten year old, on a sale that totaled $140, was exceptionally nice to find. I don't think he could have taken my son more seriously if it had been me looking at $1400 rifles.

Guys,

Thanks for the replies. I'm hoping it's the same gun, 'cause if it is, they will match McBride's price, I get to take it home, and I get a $75 gift card for a promotion that I got in the mail for a purchase over $300. And the coolest part is I get to use my plastic to get me out the door without the fear of an NICS delay that would make me have to make another trip to Buda to pick it up the next day. Fingers crossed!!

I've done business at Cabela's in Buda, and at McBride's. Since I work in East Austin, Cabela's is more convenient for me on the way home.

McBride's has that good old-fashioned gun store atmosphere, but it's a little out of my commute route. If I have the time to linger in town after work, I like going there. Ironically, New Braunfels does not have a decent gun store, and the WalMart there never has a decent ammo selection.

I do recognize the concept of paying a little more for convenience, therefore I don't gripe about the price difference.

Value is what somebody is willing to pay. I love the free-market system.

I have always found McBrides gun prices to be pretty good. I did buy my wifes Ruger LCP from Cabela's only because they had it on sale at the time. I guess in a way I am lucky, I work about 2 miles from McBrides and we live about 5 miles from Cabela's in Buda.

I'm a big fan of Cabelas, especially for ammo availability. It just so happens that it's right at the end of the toll road I take home from Austin, so it's convenient. They are a bit pricey, but convenient.

You haven't spent much time at the Bass Pro Shops gun counter, I take it?

BPS and Cabela's are just about equidistant from me, but I'd rather visit Cabela's. Unless I had a real good coupon for BPS, then I'd think about it. But I'll take McBride's over either, even if it is a fair piece more down the road. And like others have said, Cabela's always seems to have more ammo in stock.

Huh. I prefer Bass Pro over Cabela's, personally. The selection on accessories is far superior, from what I've seen.

For example, duck calls have about triple the selection at the BPS in San Antonio than they do at Cabela's in Buda, and the prices are better. I also was able to find the specific Pachmayr grip for my BHP I was looking for at BPS, while Cabela's has squat. The clothing selection seemed better at BPS, and less pricey at that. The selection of fishing gear at BPS also seems to be quite superior.

I don't have much experience gun shopping at either, aside from the Stoeger Condor I bought from BPS last time I was in SA. The pricing for it was competitive with any other place I could find ($350), including McBride's (they had the same price, in fact).

Speaking of McBride's, They do have a very good selection of guns. Prices to me seem a little high to me, though. Also, ammo there is WAY overpriced, and selection is quite limited. They seem to love carrying Fiocchi, which is overpriced in and of itself. They do have a very good selection of magazines, though and I do buy all my mags there, since they generally have them. Holsters are hit-and-miss, depending on what you want. The mid-range Bianchi stuff is plentiful there, and there's plenty of low-end stuff like Uncle Mike's as well as a good selection of slings and whatnot for long guns.

if you think any of these stores are high, take a leisurely stroll through Sportsman's Finest IN Lakeway. They were $50 higher on a 2X Leupold handgun scope than McBrides, who BTW was selling it the same as online prices.. Usually, Cabelas is where I go to look around when i think I'm paying too much for something.

Yeah, Sportsman's Finest is high priced sometimes, but they did have the dual M-2 mounted on an anti-aircraft mount for only $80,000 last time I was in there. They have some other neat toys that no one else has locally.

I must be the only person that doesn't like McBrides; they refused to serve me due to my British accent, even though I have a CHL and have been a long-time resident of Texas. Of course, it's their right to serve, or not serve, whom they wish, but the condesending attitude I got, together with the completely entrenched hands-over-ears response I got while showing them the printed rules and regs from the ATF website completely turned me off altogether.

No such attitude with Sportsman's Finest from whom I have bought two new and one used firearm at fair market price, or from Cabelas who have great prices when you make use of the vouchers you get from them in the mail (eg $150 cash card if you spend $500 or more).

Why were you showing them atf rules? What were they for?

I'm also a Brit and a long time Austin resident. I've bought a pistol at McBrides with no problems at all, and this was before I had a CHL. They do get busy and, at times, I have found some of their staff to have what I call "gun store attitude". By that I mean they know it all and the customer is wrong if they disagree. But it seems no more prevalent at McBs than at any other gun shop I've visited. Their prices can be a little high but they do often seem to have stock of items that other places do not have. I would also choose pay at extra $10 on a $300 item and support a local business rather than one of the big box stores.
