Alright, this 1911 bug is getting me pretty bad. Now my brother's got it too. He started with a Para 645 LDA and now he can't stop, he's looking for a full sized now. I've always liked 1911's, and I've always planned on getting one, but now I'm actually researching a little bit. I'm sure everyone has a favorite brand or type, but is there a generally acknowledged, overall good set up? I'm not looking for opinions on the perfect carry set up, because I know that would be a never ending debate, and not everything works for everyone. Just a nice combination of features. I'm I'm leaning towards a commander sized 4" barrel, and I'm not really brand specific. I handled a Kimber Pro Carry II the other day at the gun store that felt really good, but alas, she still lives at the store and not in my safe. My only concern is sights. If I don't get one that already has tritium sights, I'll add them. But I've read that the slide has to be machined for different sights and what not. I've only changed sights on Glock's before and that's a simple push in with the tool and you're done installation. I built my own AR, I thought about doing something similar with a bare bones GI model 1911, but I don't really know where to start. Any suggestions, hints or helpful tidbits from you 1911 guys?

Oh, and by the way. I've been pretty busy lately so I've only been able to watch some things and not really had time to respond much. I just want to thank Chas for one for keeping this site up the way you do. And I also want to thank txinvestigator for his knowledgeable participation and posts. It seems like he's been kind of a target of some anger lately. If it weren't for guys like you, and alot of others such as Longtooth, Greybeard, Flintknapper, and others too many to mention but not ignored, this wouldn't be half the productive board it is. So thanks to all of you from a young member for sharing your experience with us all.

There are lots of 1911's on the market. My first one was a Springfield mil-spec. A little large to carry, but some do. Try a commander size. Some of the smaller ones are finnicky with certain ammo. The commander size is a good compromise on size and concealability. Alloy frames help on weight.

The 1911 addiction is one I can not deal with in moderation.

Let's just refer to it as, "An extravagance in which we indulge".
If your kids aren't hungry it's not a problem.

I agree with going 4" or larger. Lots of people with shorter 1911s that are reliable but overall they seem to have more issues. Changing the sights will depend on what it has to begin with. Have you been to http://www.1911forum.com/ ? Lots of good stuff on the forums there.

KINNY!! I trusted you! I thought it would really be a helpful link! All it did was make me realize there are so many like those who are homeless and need to move in to my gun safe and holster! My ARs need 1911 company. That didn't help with the bug at all!!!

Never really thought much of them til I shot a Kimber Warrior and that forever changed my mind. I will probably still carry a Sig, but I'll definitely pick up a 1911 of sorts for a range gun.

Agree on both. Sig is the choice of Mom & wife at the range. I really like them too. Am on the lookout for a 239 in either 9mm or .40. in good shape.

Agree on both. Sig is the choice of Mom & wife at the range. I really like them too. Am on the lookout for a 239 in either 9mm or .40. in good shape.

As am I - can't decide between the 239 or the 229 for CHL. Really like how the 239 feels but I'm a slight bigger guy, not huge but I think a 229 would conceal just as well. A hair under 6" and about 220 - though I hope to be 200 in a few months.

Actually, there is no cure, as others said...only medication...

My first...found a Colt 9mm Conversion Unit at a gun show. Put it on a Caspian frame... then came the Kimber TLE/RL, Kimber Tac Pro, and the Dan Wesson PMA-S 10mm...

Who knows what's next...

One thing about them all... It is a unique feel, a 1911 in your hand...

The 229 is a double stack & most men handle it very well. Definately not to big for CC. The 239 is a single stack & really fits the ladies hands. That is why they like it so good. Little small for me too but when I need to really hide one (tuck a shirt in over it) that is much easier than Kimber Pro.
Good job on the weight loss too. 5 yr ago I weighed 240+. Today I was in the hospital visiting & stopped to weigh on a scale left in the hall. 202 w/ Kimber Pro & 2 extra 10 round mags. I aint going back either. I feel better. You will too.
