Just had a ramp and throat job done on my old .45 by Vanden Berg Custom. Now I need to put some hollow points through it to make sure it works. (I'm sure it will, but it's probably a good idea to test before I bet my life on it.) I was planning to use Federal 230gr HydraShok as my defense load. Cheaper Than Dirt has it for $20 per box, plus shipping and tax, of course. Does anybody know where I can get it locally and at what price?

Duh! Forgot to say that I'm in Clear Lake.

Sometimes Carter's Country in Pasadena sells them for $10 a box, but the thing is you have to catch them on a sale.

I'm not really trying to steer you away from your chosen ammo, but you might want to try Winchester Ranger SXT. It can be bought much cheaper than HydraShok and comes in 50 rd. boxes. Everyone but me seems to have had very good performance in terms of feeding and function. I need to do more testing now because I'd really like to get away from HydraShoks.

In the DFW area you can get them at the DFW gun range. I believe they are excellent. I have had them in .45 now in 9mm.

Academy in League City had them at $14.86 for 20. Prodefense, the cop shop on I-45 just south of NASA 1, had them at $23.95 for 50. I bought two boxes from the cop shop. Eventually, I'll order more from CTD at $18.97 per box of 50 if you join their buyer's club, assuming the shipping is reasonable.

Prodefense had the Winchester Ranger loads, but will sell them only to law enforcement. The salesman did inform me that I could buy them at gun shows, but Prodefense has an agreement with the manufacturer to sell them only to police.

I picked the 230 gr Federal HydraShok round because the latest Marshall & Sanow book rates it a 96% stopper, i.e., one shot stops in 166 out of 173 shootings. Some people attack Marshall's methodology, but they tend to be jello shooters. To my knowledge, no one has ever needed to use a forty-five to repel the attack of a block of gelatin.

Unfortunately, I've whiled away the afternoon running errands, and won't be able to get out to the range today.

I know you asked for local places but I bid on and purchased 100 rounds (two 50 round boxes) at Gunbroker.com. I got them from a place in California and I believe it extrapolated to about $14.00 per 20 rounds. This is the only round I put in my 5 inch 1911's. While I was at it I also bid on and purchased 100 round of 40 S&W Hyda-shoks. If you want more info, send me a pm.

Also, I suggest the Federal HST round. Check it out.

I'll second the Ranger SXT recommendation. It feeds as well as anything I've shot in 1911's, BHP's and CZ's. It has also proven to be very accurate. Saving 30 - 50 percent over the other premiums doesn't hurt either.

This write up shows one of the shortcommings of HydraShok. It will not expand reliably after going thru denim.
