"Homicide detectives are still investigating an overnight shooting in which a resident of a north Houston apartment said he disarmed a burglar and killed him with his own gun.
The shooting occurred about 10 a.m. Thursday at the Worthington Apartments at 1350 Greens Parkway, KHOU Channel 11 reported.
Police said two residents reported that they came home and found that two men had broken into their apartment.
One of the intruders had a gun, which was wrestled away from him during a struggle with the residents, police said.
The resident fired, killing one of the burglars, while the other ran away, police were told.
Investigators were trying to identify the dead man and determine why the pair chose to break into that apartment."

I read about this in the morning paper. I wondered - is it possible the dead guy was NOT breaking in but came in willingly or unwillingly with the shooter & his friend and was popped for some reason (argument; drug deal gone wrong; love triangle)? We only have the stories from the survivors of the incident. The dead guy's telling no tales, obviously. Still...

That was the first thing that crossed my mind as well, how likely is his "I took the gun (without any shots fired?) and then shot the bad guy" story? I guess the other alleged robber would have to come forward to dispute it.

I didn't consider the possibility of the robber being invited in and then shot, but I did ask myself if the gun had been planted on him. If the resident actually had the gun to begin with, but told the police that he took it from the burglar, for some reason or another. I wonder if it will come out sometime down the line that the homeowner could not legally own a firearm (ie. convicted felon). Maybe I'm just being too cynical and jaded, but how often does a homeowner/resident go in unarmed when there is evidence of a burglary in progress, disarm one of two bad guys, and shoot that bad guy to death? Something doesn't add up right here.

That's not to say that this may not be a justifiable defensive shooting. Even if the resident were for some reason prohibited from owning a firearm, he may have interrupted a burglary in progress.

Update: Homicide detectives have now determined that burglar had attended Texas A&M
University (he was an Aggie...) which explains everything, and have now closed the case

So you're saying he shot himself and the homeowner took the credit?

Well, whenever i was looking for an apartment, they ALWAYS run a background check on all rental applicants. At least at the NICER complexes(oxymoron, i know), they wont let you live there even if you have a misdemeanor. All felons are immediately turned away because more people are paying extra to have some piece of mind. I Know across from my unit i have at least 2 Harris County Deputies living there and one even leaves his patrol car out at night. Its not too bad.
Back to the issue at hand, im sure that most thugs don't know actual fight techniques, and aren't used to people fighting back.

That's not true with many of today's gansta oriented youth who fight for fun and are required to
attack others physically to please their gangsta brothers and/or to join a gang or to fullfill
initiation requirements.

And, it's only getting worse from here since life is constantly being devalued.
