Hi,

I was wondering is anyone here could give me some advice on my AR-15 and the accuracy problem I am having with it. It is a AR-15 A2 Model 16� barrel and has about 2200 rounds through it. I got a Leapers 6x scope and went to the range today to remove the 1X scope that I have been using. The rounds were all over the place, so we sandbagged the rifle so it was locked in place and fired again. We not only had shots high and low but left and right. No discernable grouping at all. The rifle did not move. My buddy was a sniper in the army and assisted in making sure the upper and lower were tight and he re-shot the rifle with the same results…. Any ideas? Questions?

I assume that you are zeroing your new scope...

Is your sandbags moving? Are you changing positions between shots?

Did you check the paralax of your scope? Is there any? There shouldn't be any for a fixed powered scope.

Is the scope mounted securely? Was your rifle shifting the scope's POA after each shot?

Bring the target closer. Does your shots still go everywhere?

Just something off the top of my head.

Oh, one more thing, is the reticle of your scope mounted securely inside the scope ? Does your POA change after each shot ?

-- Unfortunately at the Collin County Gun Range they are fixed targets at 50 and 100 yards..

Another thought...

If you take off your scope and use the iron sights (noticed you have an A2 sighting system), how does your rifle shoot on the 50 yard line ? Just wanted to make sure it isn't the rifle.

Next, can you try your scope on another rifle? Just to eliminate that it is not the scope.

Lastly, check your scope-rifle attachment.


You can also use your iron sights as an initial zeroing point for your new scope. This should bring it on paper (at least) at 50 yards.

The problem w/ scope on an A2 (at least for me) is that it is mounted kind of high and doesn't allow me to have a good cheek weld w/ the buttstock. This means it is difficult for me to have a consistent head/eye position between shoots. I do NOT see this as a problem in your case since your target is only 50 - 100 yards.

If you put back your 1x scope (red dot?), can you rezero it ok? Or does the shots still go everywhere?

Collin County has target stands you can move as close as 25 yards. I have done so.

Also be sure your scope is not canted.

I second using the irons. Also, what ammo are you using?

I would second the ammo as a possible culprit. Ammo can make a huge difference in an AR.

Also, the carry-handle scope mounts on A2 AR-15's can easily get loose. If you removed it to install the new scope it could easily be the culprit.

Thanks I will have to try that this weekend. I will let you know. I will try the scope on my SP-10 (Similiar to the MP5 rifle)

Thanks TXI - I will inquire with them on my next visit. How is the rebuild of your range doing? I work in the park cities area and want to swing by but didnt want to fight to get a lane.

The scope could be canted. I will check again. - as far as ammo it is the WOLF brand .223 55Gr JHP ammo. I havent had any problems with its performance thus far but wasnt trying for real decent accuracy really until now.

Come by and see us. The construction guys have our 15 yard range, which is usable, shut off sporadically during the day, but I'll buy you a really bad cup of coffee.
