On becoming a gun nut...

I had an interesting experience this morning that i couldn't help but laugh at and share with you folks.
In traffic this morning on 45 a guy on a motorcycle passed me. It was an off-duty cop on a civilian bike. I looked over at him as he passed me in his lane (speeding i might add) and said "nice, he's got a 1911".
then it occurred to me.. I can now spot a 1911 just by the bit sticking out of his holster as he went by. Two years ago, maybe even 1 year ago I would have thought, "nice shiney gun!".... now i can tell you it was a 1911 even without seeing the whole thing and at a distance of 5-7 feet with it driving by on the guy's hip. I thought to myself... man, i must be turning into a gun nut. (not that that's a bad thing)
have any of you had moments like this?

At work one day, I thought to myself, I wonder what our security guards are issued. I looked every day for a week during the badge check and couldn't figure it out. I didn't want to ask and draw unnecessary attention, but I finally figured it out when I was at a gun show and picked up a Sig 228. The sights gave it away.
And the politically correct term is "gun
enthusiast"

OK, so I'm enthusiastically nutty about guns...
...but I know exactly what you guys are talking about, although I've been ill with this affliction for years now. To this day, I give myself a secret brownie point if I'm able to identify someone's weapon right off that bat with one look and without asking.
Kinda' silly, isn't it?

I catch myself doing it all the time now. I'm looking at Cops, Guards, etc. I am still not well versed, but I'm doing it anyways.

My family is sick and tired of my pointing out during movies the types of guns being used and the mistakes.
I can sometimes spot others that are carrying too. Look for the Hawaiian shirt! My 13 year old daughter knows this and starts laughing when she sees me or another Dad wearing one.
We are all "Gun Nuts" and proud of it!

ya, the movies drive me nuts now too. The last thing i spotted was in a shoot-out. The guy had emptied his magazine out of what looked like a Beretta 92. Then he turns and threatens someone else with the gun without reloading (slide catch is still holding the slide back). I remember thinking.... he's threatening them with an empty gun... Bad guys ran away though. Guess they didn't notice either.
I wear hawaiian shirts all the time and i'm not carrying. "It's a medical device" I've actually rationalized that now so that i can say that with a straight face. It could very well save my life one day. That makes it a medical device. :)

When I was in London on a train from the airport (Gatwick Express), there was a group of Police officers walking the compartments with HK MP5's and I commented on the them as well as the optics. Some people around me gave me weird looks...LOL!! I felt pretty good knowing that I was probably the only one on the entire train that had any idea of what they were carrying.

Another correct term is "oenologist". But I still call myself a "wino".

Really bad when you go to the news stand and buy a gun magazine and get home only to figure out you already bought that one 2 or 3 weeks ago. Too many to remember!!
