Small CCW Question.
I'm sure I can hear a dead horse nahing in the forums somewhere, But I have a question on CC with a P-3AT.
I use the Glock 27 and/or 19 for my daily carry now, with a Comp-Tac IWB tuckable. But with my build these weapons print pretty bad with a tucked shirt ( seated, bending over...etc ) . I was wanting to find a smaller pocket style weapon for work and formal events and my friend suggested this Kel-Tec.
Questions:
1) Is this a decent gun for everyday carry?
2) Should I consider a pocket holster instead of beltclip, i would hate to shoot my leg? ( my friend just uses beltclip on his pants pocket, Looks like a pocket knife. )
3) Can this gun shoot hot defense rounds?
Any Suggestions are welcome.

Re: Small CCW Question.
someone else can suggest the snubnose revolver. it's how I roll, but I digress.
pocket holster is a great way to go. the holster covers the trigger guard, but the 40# trigger pull aids in the safety aspect as well. I don't know about the PEAT's ammo requirements.

FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.
Re: Small CCW Question.
You can get Kel-Tec pistols in 9mm. PF9 should fit in most pockets, although a P3AT is considerably smaller and it's a .380.
You can get .380 HPs. There is great debate about whether HPs are better for a .380 or whether FMJ are better given the lighter loads.
Of course if you get a Kel-Tec 9mm then you will have all order of good SD ammo to choose from.

I've seen the 9mm Kel-Tec, and your right its quite a bit larger. I guess the P-3AT could be considered a "mousegun". But heres the ammo i found, i'm just not sure the Kel-Tec could hold up to it.

Well, there are rumblings about Kel-Tecs not being appropriate for a huge number of rounds in their lifetime (maybe a couple of K rounds? 5K?). So this number gets smaller with +P. However if you figure you might do 50 rounds a month or so through it just to keep sharp with your carry gun, then that will last you a decade with standard pressure, less with +P.

Re: Small CCW Question.
Have you considered looking at the Ruger LCP? Same caliber and size with a slightly more known name behind it. Costs a little bit more, but the fit and finish are better.

Re: Small CCW Question.
I thought early reports were that the LCP is less reliable and worked-out than the P3AT ???

Re: Small CCW Question.
I've only heard one report that wasn't totally positive about the LCP, and that had to do with a specific type of ammo not feeding properly.mr.72 wrote:I thought early reports were that the LCP is less reliable and worked-out than the P3AT ???
I have one myself, and have had no issues at all with it. I've put about 200 rounds (from 4 different manufacturers) through it so far, with no failures whatsoever.
I believe it to be superior to the P3AT in workmanship, and it feels much better in the hand.

Ah the Ruger LCP, Nice weapon. Looks like Academy has them for 299.99 thats 30bucks cheaper than kel-tec. I'll try and find some reviews on this gun, but it looks like a perfect fit, and its a Ruger, so you can't go wrong there.

Re: Small CCW Question.
Picked up the Ruger LCP right after work today. Went home grabbed some cheap ball ammo and went back to the range and put 150 rounds through it. This little thing is a wonder, I was able to keep 3-4inch pattern at 50ft, and stack em at 7ft. Thats not bad for such a shorty, I can normally hold a 2-3 inch pattern with my Glock 19 at 50ft with custom barrel and recoil reducer.
The only thing i've noticed so far, is i've bought some Cor-Bon JHP ammo for it, until i can order some Buffalo Bore, and it seems to feed real tight. I have to give the slide a little nudge forward on the first round. Now i have not tried shooting the cor-bon yet as i bought it on the way out, but i'm not sure if this is gona be an issue, so i guess i'll wait on carring it till i get some cor-bon through the business end.
Cheers and thanks for the advice.

Re: Small CCW Question.
If it's any help, I use Hornady XTP, and have had no problems at all with it. I have had nothing but good experience with this ammo, and it feeds beautifully in every gun/caliber I've tried it in.Disturbed wrote:Picked up the Ruger LCP right after work today. Wow that was quick. From initial suggestion, to the store, to the range, to range report in less than 6 hours. Kudos to you, sir.

Re: Small CCW Question.
Ive been pocket carrying a Kel-Tec PF9 now for a couple weeks. I carry it in my pocket in a IWB holster so I can slip it in my belt if need be.
I'd post a picture, but Im not sure I can upload an image directly to the forum without hosting it somewhere else...

Re: Small CCW Question.
Corbon's .380 DPX in the Kel-Tec gets high recommendations for both penetration and expansion (for a .380 round) from trainer John Farnam (who has done some gelatin testing with a variety of DPX rounds, including thru clothing and whatnot), and Marshall's gelatin testing showed it gets decent penetration for a .380 as well. As far as performance once it exits the barrel, I would think there would be little difference between the P-3AT and the LCP. As far as feeding and locking into battery, I don't know -- that could vary even between P-3ATs. You'd just have to try it and see.
Note -- Corbon DPX is different from the Corbon JHP +P. I don't recall (without running to the safe and looking at the box) if the DPX is "+P" or not, but I would not worry too much about wearing out a LCP or a P-3AT. I would not expect either of them to last as long as a full size service pistol, but so what? For the price, you can buy another one and keep it as a hot spare (or in the other pocket as a backup/NewYork reload).
Good luck.
