Thinking of applying to work for Austin PD
I'm such a newbie at this. Can any experienced LEO give me some ideas on how to "get in"? And what are the physical demands for certain departments? Thanks in advance. ![Cool ](./images/smilies/icon_cool.gif)

KinnyLee,
Go to the Department's human resource or personnel office. Pick up an application packet, and remember to ask what their deadlines are. Training academys are usually scheduled a year in advance and packets need to be turned in by a certain deadline to insure there is enough processing time.
Be totally honest in all your answers to every question. Don't try telling them what you think they want to hear. A large department like Austin will have a thorough background check and if they can trip you up on one of your answers, you are history. When you fill out the paperwork, put people down as references that you know will give you a good report, and who won't flake out when a detective starts asking them questions about you.
Start working out by running and getting into shape. Concentrate on pushups and pullups, other exercises that will increase upper body strength. The application packet should have a complete list of what the physical test requires.
If you get past the initial background investigation, you will probably be scheduled to have appointments for both physical and mental tests. They might even include a polygraph. Again, be totally honest.
The waiting period is the worst, seems like it is forever. But, get past that and the academy, you will be entering a career that is both challenging and rewarding.

+1 on what Dave T said. I would also not limit myself to applying with just one dept. I also made a copy of my first application (to League City) and it made things a whole lot easier and consistent when I filled out packets for other cities as well.
