Gun Collection Software

I just upgraded computers and the software I was using for my collection is no longer supported and basically
I have to start over. What are you guys/gals using to keep track of the safe inventory so our kiddos dont give away
the goodys when we tip over?

So far, I have been using just files and folders to keep track.

However, I have bought the following and will be transferring over.

It looks like it will do everything needed.

My current setup starts with a folder named 'firearms'. There are subfolders for rifles, shotguns, pistols, revolvers, etc.

Within each folder for each particular gun, are subfolders to contain manuals, scanned copies of receipts, photos, etc.

I will go into more detail if anyone is interested.

At this time, I expect to maintain both systems.

Funny you should post this... I was just thinking that I should burn a disc with photos of my firearms and a spreadsheet with serial numbers, descriptions, etc. and keep it somewhere safe for insurance purposes or in case they get stolen. However, I'm on a Mac, so none of these programs will run on my machine. That being said, I can create an Excel file and import the pictures and then burn the results to disc.

If you're running OS 10.4+, the NM Collector JE Lite will run just fine, and it's free.

And for those of you who don't have/want the Microsoft Office suite, Open Office does a pretty decent job. And it's open-source software, so it's free :) It works with Windows and Linux, but I don't know about Mac.

The thing about openOffice is that it is built upon a standard that is intended to always be upwards compatible.... I bet the OP got suckered into using that macrovirus called Vista that breaks 90% of windows programs ever written. I feel his pain. OpenOffice works on Linux windows, solarus and I believe the Mac under some compatibility thing. The real beauty of such a gun colection database is that one can develop the database and put the whole thing oppen office and the database on a flash drive. thereby making it accessible from any computer.

Open Office runs in MacOS 10.3 (possibly 10.2) if x11 is installed. In 10.4+, it runs natively.
