I have a .22 semiauto pistol and would like to add a .22 double action revolver to my family and would like some recommendations from the forum.

Do you want small and lightweight w/short barrel for plinking, or do you want standard-sized/longer barrel for target work or hunting?

Do you have a price range that you need to stay in?

Do you want a new pistol, or would you consider a used one?

I am very pleased with my S&W model 617. Double action, available in either 10 round or 6 round cylinder. You can save a lot by finding a used one.

Do you want new or used? Some of those older (30 years+) can't be beat by anything modern. Of course they can be pricey because of that too.

first recommendation: "pre-safety" Three Screw Ruger Single Action Six, with extra 22 mag cylinder

second recommendation: "modern" Two Screw Ruger Single Action Six, with 22 mag cylinder

my "three screw" model is now easily worth $500+, but I still have the original box with SN marked on it with aluminum grease marker, the warranty card, all original hardware, the spare cylinder red bag with gold cord, and the original price tag on the string that was hanging from the trigger guard marked "$69.95" My Dad bought it for us in '71 or '72 and he probably didn't shoot more than a couple hundred rounds through it. Since he died a few years ago, the only time the gun comes out is for my grandson to run a few rounds through.

Rugers are rock solid and definately have the potential to be passed down a generation or three

IMHO, you can't go wrong with a Dan Wesson revolver that was made in Monson, Mass. These pieces were produced from about 1979-90. They are easy to find at inflated prices, and hard to find at reasonable prices. Here's one:

The double action requirement really narrows the field. I am not sure any of the major companies other than S&W are making full size double action 22's now. You can find any caliber you want in single action but the choices get very small for double action revolvers. The market is apparently demanding cowboy single action and small double action carry revolvers and that seems to be what the companies are producing. I guess supply and demand dictates production models for all industries, including firearms.

I plan on buying used if I can find one that has not been abused. Taurus makes .22 DA revolvers in 2" but I really wanted a longer bbl. I have not ruled out a SA. I have a Ruger .357 Blackhawk that I enjoy when huunting.

I will check out the DW and S&W.

I have 2 SA .22 revolvers that are great. I have a Heritage that I got at Academy for $137! It's not the prettiest thing, but for burning ammo at a cheap price, you can't beat it. I also have my grandfather's Colt Peacemaker .22. I have no idea how much it's worth. It's not really even a consideration, so I haven't looked into it. It's got a little rust on the end of the barrel that's been there as long as I can remember. I shot it first when I was 5, and I'm 28 now, so it's been there awhile. It's in the original styrofoam box with a .22 mag cylinder too. It never leaves the safe anymore. If you just want to play, I think the Heritage is fine if you're not set on DA.

Check out the S&W 34 or the Kit guns. Colt made the Diamondback and I think the Trooper in .22lr, but a good one will likely be more than what you would want to spend. I've read several times of problems with the Taurus .22's (they do make one in about a 5" barrel, btw), which seems to have occasional problems with weak springs causing inconsistent ignition. Probably the best new DA's would be the S&W 63 or 617....

Taurus makes .22lr revolvers in several barrel lengths. However, I'd go with the 617 even though it costs a lot more. Handle them both and then you can decide.

Taurus 94s are available in almost anything you want.
Otherwise it's S&W. Oh, and H&Rs.
