Colt 1911, max range 82 feet
I came across this article on the military's longest range weapons. The first on the list is the 1911 which they advise has a range of 82 feet. And the Barrett .50 has a range of 1850 feet! Hmmm.

Re: Colt 1911, max range 82 feet
A .45 caliber boolit is only 4.43% smaller than a .50 caliber boolit. You’d think its range would be more like 1,768.05 ft.
Either that, or the .50 caliber boolit's real range is only approximately 85.633 ft (if I did my maffs right).
Hard to tell which it is.

Maybe this has to do with whether you can actually hit a person beyond 82 ft. You know if it beyond 82 ft, officer, you should use your rifle.
Re: Colt 1911, max range 82 feet
That's just super bizarre. 82 feet is 27.3 yards. What the heck? And if a Barrett .50 BMG can only shoot 617 yards, somebody has some 'splainin' to do.
But I'm not seeing any data like that at the MSN link provided. Even followed the link in the article to https://www.militaryfactory.com/ and couldn't locate anything there, at least not after surfing around to several pages.

Other numbers in there are just weird.

82 feet is really close to 25 meters. Still, about half of the 50 meters I recall as the maximum effective range I was taught for M1911/M1911A1.

Did you click the right arrow in the photo? That leads to the images and data on the specific firearms and where I got the numbers.Rafe wrote: ↑Thu Nov 02, 2023 11:11 am That's just super bizarre. 82 feet is 27.3 yards. What the heck? So that's what those little arrows are for. I honestly never thought to check a "slideshow"; I thought the data would be part of the article, not captions accompanying photos. Doh! But several commenters noted that if you changed "feet" to "yards" the effective ranges made a lot more sense.

Re: Colt 1911, max range 82 feet
Yeah, I might only be good for 82 feet with a 1911 but I'm sure it would manage 82 yards and probably more in the right hands.

According to Wikipedia, the Barrett M82's stated range is 1830 METERS, not feet.
You can always count on MS(N, NBC, etc) being factually incorrect. It's a stupid article and I feel dumber having read it.
