VERNON (Special) —

“I think making schools gun-free zones was one of the stupidest things ever done on earth,” Thweatt said.
This is one of the smartest things I've heard from an educational administrator in decades.

If I can carry everywhere else, day in and day out and not have a ND or gun scare or shoot up the mall or my congregation, then why don't I have the mental and physical capibilities to carry the same way at school?[/quote]

I wasn't clear in my previous post, I DO want you to be able to carry at school. I would rather identify a situation in which an accident could happen and plan ways to avoid it than deal with the accident itself.
I'm definitely not trying to single out teachers, http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... v=hcmodule
I know coaches who change clothes at least twice during the school day, not always in a locker-room. Frequently other employees change into something more or less casual to match what they are doing at that time of the day. Certainly possible for somebody who purse carries to move a weapon from one purse to another.
I believe the majority of chl holders are quite capable of carrying at school safely. On the other hand, there are a lot of stories about unsafe gun handling during classes/qualifications. It isn't stupidity or apathy, some people simply don't have knowledge or experience in weapon handling. Therefore I also believe a little extra training and certification to help insure firearm proficiency would reduce the chance of somebody making a stupid mistake that sets legal carry back instead of allowing it to move forward. 2-3 days of firearm training (carry methods, safe handling, weapon retention, scenarios, live-fire drills) would be pretty welcome compared to some of the other crap I've sat through.

No offense taken Trog. When I read back through my post I saw that I could have done better.
My wife & I are both middle school teachers, we have children in the middle and elem. schools. I would feel better knowing that they were protected at school and on field trips by armed teachers. I just want more training and testing than you get with a chl.

The "Guns In School" segment on was on Fox and Friends this a.m. (Monday, 18 Aug 08). The link below takes you to a number of video segments, including the "Guns in School" segment:

http://www.foxnews.com/video2/video08.h ... index.html

Segment featured David Thweatt, Superintendent of the Harrold School District, and Gayle Fallon, President of the Houston Federation of Teachers. Ms. Fallon thinks that guns in school, except for one armed security guard per school, is a bad idea. She stated that the Harrold School District can allow teachers and support personnel can be armed only because of a "loophole" (probably a close cousin of the "Gun Show Loophole") that will be closed in the next session of the Legislature.

Personally, I think that the Harrold School District is on the right track. Superintendent Thweatt mentioned that folks who have trained for the concealed carry permit probably have better training and better vetting than the security guards mentioned by Ms. Fallon.

I know if I had kids, I'd much rather they be protected by teachers than by some minimum wage yahoo who's last job was at Burger King.

Ms. Fallon's quote in interview: " A loop hole that's gonna get plugged."

Methinks she's gonna have a real battle on her hands with that one.

Having heard sound clips from Ms Fallon on TV for many years, I'd side with WHOEVER she's arguing against. This situation is no exception.

:iagree:

Shes going to be in a real quandary when schools are taken off the no carry list. :cheers2: To the 2009 session. May we fight the liberals not only in the state but federal congress as well. :cheers2: to common sense and to more guns less crime doctrine

Just took a fast look and didn't see any place to post, but there was an opinion poll going. At this time it's:

Would you want your kids' teachers to bring their guns to work?
Heck yes! It's a crazy world out there.
48.35 %

Heck no! Schools aren't the place for guns. Period!
51.65 %

How can 51.65% of the people answering that poll not understand that guns are already in schools?
