If you want cheap, you should consider 5.45x39, but even that has gone up appreciably in the last couple of months.

Most of what I bought is Russian surplus that I paid $210/2160 rds. My last order earlier this month was $225/2160, but with a price increase notice effective 12/1. There is also quite a bit of Bulgarian surplus out there that I see for slightly more.

AK-74's are harder to find now as they didn't catch on well. The Polish Tantal and the Century WASR-2 are what is currently offered. I have a shoulder stocked Tantal that I got from Interarms here in Houston. Then two weeks ago, I called Southern Ohio Guns and the side folder Tantal was the only AK style firearm still in stock, so I ordered one of those. At that time, the price was still $499. Otherwise, don't count on finding a 'cheap' AK. WASR 10/63's (7.62x39) selling for less than $400 recently are now bringing double that and more.

While the surplus at 11 cents and slightly higher is attractive, it is most likely corrosive and should be treated as such. And as a comparison, Monarch at Academy for 5.45x39 was $8.79 a box which is no bargain. I have found deals on Barnaul and Wolf to add to my stash, but prices on these have risen since.

When I said the item was removed from their web site, I should have said that it no longer appeared in their list of available 7.62x39 ammo.
Just received another 'backorder change' from SPG. When I originally ordered the arrival date was to have been 12/1.

The next notice I received changed the arrival date to 1/9/09.

Today's notice changes the expected arrival date to 2/2/09.

The trick is to make sure to reply to every one of these notices, confirming that you want the backorder to remain open.

Otherwise, the order and the good pricing go away.

Yep. I applaud them for conducting business that way and sticking to their backorder commitments. Many months ago, I ordered a pretty good quantity of S&B .45 ACP ball ammo from them at just over $10 per 50. The last of the orders arrived about three months after the new price had gone up to over $15. Today, the best price I've found anywhere is $17.

I have had good luck with the monarch. I sure would like to catch some on the shelf when I go in. I have not seen it in a while. They might as well put something else in the spot that it goes. It is never in stock.
