There are a lot of things that you're not supposed to do in any faith, but if you're going to do it to save your own life, then it's ok. I.E. your not supposed to do harm to your own body (no cutting yourself) yet it's ok if a Dr has to in order to save your life. The way I see it, if it's my time to go I'll have a miss-fire, if it's not, I won't.

It may not be in the Bible, but it's absolutely true Image

Unfortunately I've seen many Christians use their faith as either a crutch or an excuse for laziness, neither of which are exactly pleasing to God. They expect God to protect them from everything, provide everything for them without doing anything, etc. If it worked that way there wouldn't even be a reason for us to be here on Earth with free will and the ability to make our own choices.

It's also not absolutely true. Sometimes, God helps those despite their best efforts to screw things up.

Which is the reason the phrase isn't "God only helps those who help themselves" ;-)

Same line of thought, but you have a better way of saying it :

This thread is totally off topic. In fact it is so far off I had to go back to the OP to find out what it was supposed to be about.

Please, take it back to the original topic, thank you.

In my case, England. :)

But, to go back to the thrust of the original post, it is a knotty problem. I was approached today, by a work colleague of my wife's. She has a long drive home over deserted plains, and wanted my advice about getting a CHL.

Sensible lady, I thought. But then she started to fantasise , about scaring folks off, shooting to wound etc. I had to (very gently, of course) explain that Hollywood is not real life and, e.g. even if you were the best shot in the world and could be sure of hitting somebody in the leg, there's this thing called the femoral artery...

It wasn't all bad. It led to an in depth conversation about stopping the threat, deadly force statutes and, generally, not being an idiot. I've invited her to the range, to try out a few of my handguns to see what suits her. If she's still interested after that, I'll hook her up with the Sheriff in a nearby county, who runs an excellent CHL class.
